Help: Loud "clunk" when backing out of garage?
My car had been sitting idle in the garage for about a week. I hopped into the car, started the engine and put the car into reverse. As I was backing out of the garage, I heard a kind of loud "clunk" sound like something was braking free. It didn't sound good. I investigated and couldn't visibly find anything wrong w/ the car, so I proceeded to back out and drive. It drove fine and I didin't notice anything. The only thing I can think of was the e-brake had gotten slightly rusty and didn't release properly. Any input would be appreciated.

Possibly the e-brake... I've had my tires stick to the floor before.

Either the pads were breaking free from the rotors, or you left the garage door closed.

*** Does your clunk occur when you bounce down from the garage floor level down to the driveway level? If so, I have the same symptom and have not figured it out yet. It's to loud for me, that I can feel it through the armrest of the passenger seat (where I have my arm when backing out). JL |

Aftermarket swaybar? If so then it's the endlink bolts. Happens to me ALL the time. Even if you don't have an aftermarket bar, it could still be the endlinks. Happened to the front right of a friend of mine's 01 RS.

Thanks guys for all the input. Orionf, I didn't even think of my sway bar, and yes I do have an aftermarket one. I think it was the e-brake breaking free because it was impeding my reverse until I engaged the clutch. I figured it was but always safe to check! Thanks guys!

12 yards long, 2 lanes wide, 65 Tons of American Pride. I wish I had a garage that could fit that!

Jason "This could be the infamous "front end clunk". Something else for you to learn about if you are new to Subarus. In a nutshell, a clunking like noise can be produced in the front end under certain conditions. Usually, it occurs when turning across an irregularity ie: turning into a driveway etc where the wheel goes across the "little ditch" at the curb between the road and the driveway. Basically anything that makes the suspension work while turning. One doesn't have to be going fast, or even turning that sharp. Eg slow driving where right wheel goes over a slight bump at a storm sewer drain can produce it. Does this sound like what you are experiencing? I don't think there has ever been a full resolution on this issue. Various attempts by Subaru have had various levels of success. One theory is power steering hoses (sometimes helps). Another is struts. (I had one changed, it helped, but I couldn't talk them into changing the other one.) To some degree, it is just a quirk of the car. Some have it worse than others (mine is slight - 97 OB). Overall, I haven't heard of anything failing or obviously wearing out faster as a result." |

I heard the same thing as well. This is the 2nd time it happened. It's a loud "CLUNK" when you have it in gear and about to drive off.
Both times happened when I haven't driven the vehicle for over 2 weeks (one in reverse, and the other going forward). Not sure what it is, but it didn't sound nice. Nothing broken that I noticed. |

Mine doesn't ever happen while driving. Only after it rains and I've let my car sit around a week, not driven. Unfortunately, I have to drive a company car during the week and my scooby sitts and gets a little neglected. I have STI struts and springs so I've negated the possibility of that problem.

Did you notice any resistance when you first starting moving your car? If your situation is the same as mine was, I wouldn't be concerned. |

i get the same "clunk" when backing out of my garage. not all the time, but i think the the only reason it's audible is because it's bouncing off the walls into the cab. i swear mine is coming from the drivetrain somewhere. probably something in a bind when i shove it into reverse. i've had no problems from it though.

Mine makes the exact same noise, it only does it while starting in
reverse from a dead stop, the noise happens mostly when backing into my garage. But sometimes it will happen on level ground. The noise is a very audible metallic "clunk" and it is not a noise that a strut or swaybar would make. My speculation is that it has something to do with driveline lash. With that being said my car has 23,000 vey enthusiasticly driven miles on it, for 16,000 of those miles the car has been modded. I have yet to experience any issues with shifting or abnormal noises besided the "reverse clunk". I don't feel any need for ME to worry about the noises that MY car makes. This is my 3rd Impreza. All of them have made one strange noise or another and not a one of them has given me any problems. |

Don't rule out rear diff noise either, that is very common on these AWD beasts as well. Also the less fluid in your rear diff, the louder it will be.

Source of Clunk !
Once when backing out of my garage, I clobbered a skunk, hence the noise "clunk". (and boy did it reek!)

i hear the same clunk in my00 RS. definately sounds like its the front driver side brake. i dont see anything amiss, and it only happens once in a while from a dead stop. Once i'm out of the driveway i dont hear it again.
