Default Taking Care Of Black

Alright I have a 2006 STi color Black and these scratches here and there + swirl marks are driving me crazy! I've talked to some detailers and they tell me they don't recommend buffing the car too often or the clear coat will start fading away. So I went to go buy some Meguiar Scratch X. Do you think this will work? It's still winter here so I can't apply it yet, attempted to try it out to see if it works but it keeps snowing! Any suggestions? I'm no detail expert.

In the summer time I've tried waxing it, oh man all of the 4 doors still look very bad. Swirl marks just all over the place.

You need to polish them out. The better the stuff you use to wash the car the less swirls will appear. Dont get me wrong, swirls happen you cant help that. http://www.autopia-carcare.com/ has a ton of info and write ups.

The Scratch X will work, however, it takes a long time of rubbing and pains in your arms to work! If you planned on doing the whole car with it, I would suggest either going about it over a few days panel by panel, or maybe trying something a little stronger.

For instance, you could check out some of Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Polish line, such as Meguiars Swirl Remover (item number M0916 on their site).

The one thing that you have to remember is that the Scratch X and some other polishes are actually abrasives, so you have to be careful as not to go overboard. I'd suggest checking out autopia like the others have said and also check out Meguiars detailing forum which both have some good reads.

No need to name call. Yes, he is wrong but approach it better.

Waxing will only hide the swirls. They're still there, just less noticeable.

tux121, try searching a bit you will find some similar issues to yours. Also go to autopia.org for much more info on polishing.

You can also try Zaino. I tried the Zaino swirl remover, and it slowly hid the swirl marks. This is probably the first and last black car I will ever own.. it's a pita to take care of

.....the only way you will actually remove those swirls is by using an abrasive product. However, the trick is determining the just the right amount, products, methods, etc. needed to get the job done. As others mentioned, I would consider reading through the articles here:

http://www.autopia.org/forum/guide-detailing/

You should then have a better idea of what may be required to obtain the results you are looking for. ......when in doubt, always start with the least aggressive method(s) first and move down from there if needed.

You will need to buff it once. Just don't use a very abrasive pad and compound. Do it once, most of them will go away. Use glaze to hide the rest, and from then on make sure you use microfiber towels to dry your car and to remove wax and you will be fine. If you use a regular towel once, they will come back.

Thanx guys for the info. As I said keeping the car clean yes I can do. Keeping scratches and swirls off? No I have experience in this. I bought some soft pads but then my buddy who works for a detailer said I will need a much rougher pad. I will read over the links you guys gave me.

Seems like some of the guys pretty much summed it up. Black is a PITA so take care of. I personally will not own a black car in my lifetime because of this. Once it is polished and the scratches are removed you are still going to have to maintain it properly or you will be back where you started. Try and keep it waxed up as much as you possibly can. I have a silver car and i wax it about once or twice a month. If you do a search you will find pics of it here in the detailing section. Take it easy and good luck.

Oh man there is nothing like black to me! I've only owned black up until now with my truck. As soon as I can get into another fun car it will be black. Take care of it from day one and its not a big deal. The look is worth the effort to me.

.....I agree. I've owned 3 black vehicles and while I understand why some will say it's a PITA, I've never regretted my decision.

+1 on this website. I use a porter cable. When the swirls are bad I use Sonus swirlbuster, then do Sonus sfx-1, sfx-2, sfx-3 then wax. After washing (use a good clean wash mitt and dry it with microfiber towels) I use Meguiars Quik detailer mist and wipe. Also have 1 bucket with your soapy water in it and 1 bucker with just water, before you add more soapy water rinse it in the just water bucket. Here is what my black looks like.

True! They look amazing when taken care of or right after a wash but give it a couple of hours and the damn thing looks dusty again. It would drive me nuts.

I know its a trade off. I must admit having a silver truck it great since it is almost never clean. I spend as much time cleaning it as I do my customers! lol

said it the best. i have had a dark green car, a yellow car and a black car. and out of all of them the black car is the best. it looks good because of my work not b/c it can hide the dirt with it's color. and besides when a black car is cleaned and waxed right it is pure sex on wheels, nothing looks better
