Best way to repair abuse done to a 00 RS Sedan 56k BEWARE
I'm not entirely sure that this is the correct place to post this, but I did a few searches and I didn't find anything that really answered the questions that I had, so if a moderator has to move this thread, I apologize in advance. That having been said..
I recently bought a 00 RS sedan, and it's got significant paint scratches and minor body damage all around. I guess I'm looking for the cheapest way to make it pretty again, seeing as how I'm a college student with a very limited budget. Thanks for the help in advance (pics below) The car had a retarded looking wind shield over the sunroof... which scratched it the entire way around. It's chipped through the clear coat, and you can see the through portions of the base to the bare roof. Various scratches that are through the clear coat where they backed into something... looks like the tree sap ate through the paint in a few spots.. and theres a couple of dents... There's also water spots over most of the roof, trunk lid, and bumper but they were near impossible to photograph, as well as various scrapes and scratches on the windows. I've gotten quite a few of the swirl marks and a couple of small scratches out with Meguires Scratch X, and claybarred nearly the entire car, as well as sealing it with two coats of Meguires NXT 2.0 paste wax. (that was after the pictures, but the major things are still identical, just shiney for the most part now) I'm taking a buffer to it later on this week, but I doubt that'll fix the bigger problems like the scraping and scratches by the sun roof. Thanks for the help guys

If a buffer cant get it out, i think ur just gonna have to live with it... If it bugs you that much, you can just sell the car to me! lol Anyways, good luck.

I've clay-barred the top 3/4ths of the car (pretty much everything from the top down to the tips of the wheels) meticulously, and it's smooth as glass. It's not something on the clear coat, its actual scratches and chips.
I love the car, it's not for sale I just want it to look good, or I wouldn't have gotten all of the gunk and dirt and whatnot that was on the car when I bought it off. I'll try the buffer first nice day I get |

.....nice reading comprehension.
Zillaz, Obviously the dent you can likely have removed with the services of a PDR (paintless dent removal) tech. As for the other damaged areas, I think you have the right idea. A buffer with the right pad(s)/products(s) may help remove some of the blemishes and mask (smooth) others. It sounds like you already know there is nothing you can do for the areas where the damage extends too deep or has caused permanent discoloration in the finish. .....short of having those spots repainted, I doubt there is much else you can do. Another solution may be to simply take it to a professional, reputable detailer (either for advice and/or to perform the corrections). btw, check your regional forums. I know in my area there are always "goup" events being organized (both for detailing and PDR) at extremely discounted rates. .......at the very least you can get a recommendation and possibly a better deal. |

I have the same stripe around the sunroof. Mine looked just as bad as yours. after a bunch of hand polishing and rubbing compound, I was able to make it look less noticeable. but like you said, its scratches, and they go all the way down.
I will soon be attemting a bigger paint correction using my Makita and some of the info on autopia.org. I'm thinking I can get it to be even less noticable, but doubt it will completely dissapear. goodluck.... |

first off im not a detailer or anything i just wax my car/bike alot lol
ive had many issues through the years with deep scratches and such and what i do is... like i said not a detailer here i would get touch up paint and get it on there just keep layering it on the scratches. let it dry for a couple days then get 2000 grit sand paper get the area wet and the paper wet (keep everything nice and wet) and using something as a block (some thing thats flat and roughly the size of the scratch don't want to be too big just work on one scratch at a time) start sanding the area very lightly to start till you get the hang of it very easy to go to far and go in to the base then your really screwed. every now and then dry the are off on the paint and you'll see how far you got the sanded areas will be kinda cloudy while the un touched areas will be clear yet this is where having built up the paint with the touch up paint is nice you should only see scuffing on the touch up paint keep sanding till you start to see the scuffing on the surrounding paint. when you see it on the surrounding paint stop dry it off get some rubbing compound (i use 3m) and rub the area vigorously it will remove the cloudy scuffed paint and polish it up nicely through some wax on it your done. i first tried this on my maxima and it worked great, until i sanded through the color. after that lil boo boo i was hesitant to do others but then i just made sure to add alot of touch up paint first and be real careful while sanding and checking often. did a couple more on the maxima and it worked great had a couple on the front of my 07 wrb wrx touched them up sanded can't even notice them now oh its really hard to do it on anything with a bend in it or on an edge i wouldn't even try it (rub through the paint pretty quick |

All of the help is greatly appreciated! I will get a few buffing products and some rubbing compound and see how it works out, as well as try some PDR for the dents. It is an 8 yearold car, and I don't expect it to look perfect, I'd just prefer it didn't look like some kid's first car, which a lot of mistakes were done to. I'll be sure to post pictures after the buffing and dent removal. Thanks again, this has given me quite a few things to try.
