Local Subaru dealer frowned upon my Perrin air filter
About 2 months ago I installed a Perrin air filter(Part # PSPINT110) into my 2012 Impreza 2.0l
Today I pull into my local dealership for the 15000 mile service. They call me over and tell me that my Perrin filer is: "Too small for your car and that we strongly suggest against oil type filters because it starts to get oil in the tube" I tell them to just install a brand new OEM filter(included at the 15000 service anyway) and give me my Perrin back. I get home and do a size comparison...and...they...are...the...same...size! WTF?!? Is this the stealerships way of covering their @ss?

but to be honest, your oil filter can blow oil into your tube. not from the factory, but when dumbasses try to clean them and over oil the crap out of them. then oil get sucked into the tube, covers the MAF sensor and screw all out of things up. then you get a just engine light, go to the stealership and they tell you SOL. but yea, basically they are trying to cover their asses. Edit: you could get a AEM dry filter |

Just put the Perrin filter back in, make sure it is not over oiled to protect the MAF sensor.
If you are bringing the car in for service, swap it out with the OEM filter. Problem solved. |

What's wrong with the OEM Subaru filter?

I like it because it can be cleaned and reused. The only downside is if you over oil a foam (or K&N) filter it can foul the MAF sensor. So if you use an aftermarket filter, don't over oil it. The filter does flow more air than the paper filter, so it is a quicker and cheaper alternative to installing a cold air intake if you are looking for increased air flow. |

So what's the process for oiling these filters? How does a customer prevent over-oiling them?

I've cleaned too many bike carbs and MAF's to ever run an oil-element filter again.
But if you like the perrin, just swap it out before you go to the dealer. |

I have a K&N filter on my ZRX, never had an issue with it. The only issue I had with the carbs was from a piece of rubber fuel line blocking a float valve (so after cleaning them I installed an inline filter).
For the car, the Perrin comes pre-oiled, so that is the baseline of how much oil to use in the future. They recommend after you oil it that you press it between some newspaper or paper towels. If you work on cars, cleaning and oiling a perrin or K&N filter correctly is not a big challenge. |

I bought it primarily because I service my own car, and like that it can be cleaned and reused. I wasn't looking for large hp or mpg gains from it. Over the life of the car it will save me money over paper filters, and it will outperform an aging paper filter, but that is my personal assessment, and you can have your own.
Good thing no one is forcing anyone here to install a perrin filter, because that would be communistic. |

Haven't been on since at least 2006!
Had my 2002 since 03', and its been a dream! I find it odd that we seem to share tastes in machinery. Anyhow back on topic- sorry- I think the airbox and intake are well laid out and made. The underhood layout of these cars is really pretty nice. I hate cars that hide things away and make working on them a pita, like the battery on a Sebring! I'm not surprised the dealer advised against the Perrin, but at least its super-duper easy to get at. |
