40 MPG is possible, but the most important mod is the one he can't make: the driver.

I never did better than 31.5 on a trip, calculated by Fuelly. Dash said 33mpg. Achieved twice. Mix of 50-60 mph mountain roads and 70 mph highways. Might have done better if I babied it on the highways, but who knows. All stock, driver and one passenger and some luggage.

40 mpg is perfectly possible, but you can't have the wrong type of hills, or wind, or go above 60mph (maybe 65 depending on other factors), or use E10 gas, or have a completely weighted down car, or be in crazy cold weather, or have under-inflated tires in the slightest (I usually over-inflate 1-2 psi, more if you really wanted to juice it), or use the AC, or have windows open...or...I got tired of thinking of all the things that drop the mpg on these...

I can usually have 1-2 of those things and still pull >40 mpg, but if you combine any more than a couple of those things, you won't hit it.

I've done 40+ multiple times hand calculated, and if you figure in the odo error, it's more like 42-43.

Point being, these 2.0 engines don't have the head room to take on extra tasks if you want good mpg. They're not my uncle's corvette (C6 auto) where he's running across I-90 at 80mph at 1500 rpm getting 30 mpg, or my old Buick Century ('95) where so long as you kept the tires reasonably inflated you could get 34-36mpg on the highway at 65-70mph.

I recently set a new record in my Fuelly. 32.8 mpg on a 90% hwy trip with AC on and cruise going 7 mph over the speed limit (67-77). This is after an ECU tune:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2658018

The Aussie who tuned a bunch of cars in that thread claims Subaru generally does mediocre tunes. I bet I could hit really close to 40 mpg at 65 mph with no AC but who has time for that

We hit 32.5 MPG, hand-calcs, on our second tank...But my wife was driving it that week.

After reading this post I took all the stuff out of my trunk, then I realized how the trunk platform is like made out of styrofoam :/ does that bother anyone?

But I can feel a change in weight and acceleration.
I average about 30mpg (Stick) with everything in the trunk

What do you mean the trunk platform? You mean the spare wheel insert that holds the jack and stuff?

It can be done fairly easily on the highway with a very flat surface, but it will only work if there's someone in front to draft a bit.

Avoid speed variation(keep higher distance from other cars to achieve it)
Just having a car even at 40 meter away+ in front increase mpg, avoid leading the pack or passing
Having low rolling resistance tires help a lot for highway, but will cost on cornering & aquaplaning
Taking corner at 10mph more than other cars also help

Some application of those techniques in real life

It help against road rage & it keep you concentrated on the road.

I hit 39.0 mpg average over a 42 mile trip yesterday. I didn't do anything crazy besides drive the speed limit. I have a roof rack I keep on all year long which does nothing to help fuel economy so could definitely achieve a higher average mpg over a longer distance.

60-65mph with cruise control the entire way with rolling hills on the PA turnpike.

Lol nope. Confirmed the car's readout to my phone using an ODB Bluetooth adapter and GPS. Getting a tune truly does wonders to these engines.

So you read MPG numbers via OBD interface, the same way the LCD display does it on the dashboard. I own 2 different models of Subaru cars and the MPG numbers on the display are off.

What exactly did you tune?

Are you using ethanol-free gas? I know that can make a big difference, especially with a tune.

Did you try hand-calculating after a full tank? Even the ODBII isn't always accurate.

It's usually 1mpg high over hand calculating after a full tank. I'm confident I can get the dashboard to read over 40 mpg over the same 40 mile trip was my point. See the tune thread if you want more info on what was done. (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2658018)

Using 93 octane from Turkey Hill right now which I believe has up to 10% ethanol added.

I can confirm EBs tune claim. I got a tune recently (2 months?) and set a new fuelly record last saturday after 2 years of ownership. The first all highway trip I've been on since getting the tune.

Underbelly tray will help reduce air resistance which will help increase mpg

Considering that's corrugated plastic, probably 5 pounds.

You should add duct tape to the seams, It will reduce the drag and looks like it belongs

How about 87 octane? How about going the opposite direction on the HW? Do you get 40+?
