A VIN? I can see him asking for a color code, but it isn't totally neccesary.

Anyhow...

Don't you think it's suspicious how they need a Long number with letters in it that matches the car DIRECTLY to you, JUST TO GET YOU SOME PARTS????

yes, parts change, but only FROM ONE YEAR TO THE NEXT. After the car is made, the bolt size doesn't just mysteriously change.

so No, i will not give my VIN number out to some kid behind a desk to get me parts. Would you give out your social security number to buy groceries??? It's the same thing in theory. That VIN # is like the cars social security number. Everything can be tracked by using it. Keep playing the odds, and one day you might regret it. Which is why I refuse to just give it out for something mediocre such as a car part, or just to look up and item in stock. It's getting ridiculous how our privacy is getting abused. And most of you are ok with it. What a sad sad day.

I hope you never have your car serviced by anyone other than yourself, ever, and that you never park your car in a public place, ever, and that you never post on the internet about what mods you have, ever

Did you actually read the thread? There are a lot of mid-year changes. "2003 WRX" isn't good enough. The radiator, gears and brakes on the 03's leap to mind.

Clearly you need to take a closer look at your dashboard.

and yea.. i did read most of the thread. but i was referring to the stock parts on the car. It's not like they were going to change sizes. There's always different sizes that can be put on. I just thought that searching by the year of the vehicle was adequate enough. Only my opinion though...

You're wrong, though. As Sir Dyno pointed out things change mid-year all the time and guess what... they're totally different. VIN makes sure you get the right parts. No one is keeping a list of VIN numbers from parts customers. You're just a paranoid monkey.

i work at south bay bmw parts department the main reason the parts guys is asking for the vin # is to look up parts because of the production date. It is easier to look up parts that way and to check the options that your car have.

I wouldn't say paranoid. just saying what makes sense to me.

Answer me this... If I buy a stock 2006 STI, how are the bolt sizes going to change. If i don't do anything to my car... how will the size of a bolt change? Is it going to shrink? Lets say I break a bolt, I still need the same size I had stock... b/c it didn't change.

So when you are telling me that the size of parts change, it doesn't make sense to me.... unless you're talking about new parts designed such as like a new radiator in a different size and such.

That's what I was referring to. Does that make sense???

"the same size you had stock" might have changed mid-year. So "2006 STi" would not be descriptive enough. It happens sometimes.

That's the point

You can't really use the bolt arguement for not needing the VIN. They CAN change mid-year. Besides, it isn't a very good example.

A better set of examples would be brake pads. They've been known to change mid-year (at even more odd intervals sometimes) with many Subaru vehicles. Having a production date would help, but I've run into plenty of times when even that has been of no use and the VIN was the only way to get the CORRECT parts.

Take Ford as another example. Telling the parts guys you have an '01 F-150 isn't going to do much good. You need to know a whole mess of other stuff to find the correct parts. The VIN narrows it down so there is less of a chance you're going to get the wrong part.

You're stuck on the one example - size. That isn't the only problem. Designs can change as well. Updates happen, revisions are made (believe it or not they don't always supercede automatically). Giving a VIN is just a way that you can be sure you're going to get the correct parts.

Am I wrong? Or are there numerous running change parts on the 04 sti?
working at a dealership i can tell you part of it is lazines and part helpful when u enter the vin into the program it pulls up an entire list of available parts and prices so instead of searching the entire list it just narrows it down and eliminates user error

most likely smart marketing, trace the vin number back to you(your address whatever), and send you up-dates and coupons, dealer specials and stuff. At least that's what I would do.

un-possible...

when we key in a vin number into the parts catalog

it goes NOWHERE - - just to the parts catalog.

no fancy secret key-in-your-vin database
no decoder ring needed

it's just to make certain parts folks get you the correct parts the first time

now the service dept... that may be a different story

The service dept does use the client information for mailers, however the parts dept would not have a VIN if the service dept did not put it on the R.O (not for counter slips, obviously)

well actually I was referring to over the counter purchases

If a parts professional asks you for a vin
they aren't going to flag your car or send you spam
they are just trying to get you the right parts, the first time....

it's just to ensure your part is for the right car.

however, some states have enacted anti-theft measures as well.

I believe California has required parts sellers to ask for a VIN to combat racing and the theft market. I have a link somewhere.

Anyhow...

I had the same thing happen to me just the other day. I went in and asked them if they had any touch up paint in stock for my 06 2.5i.

As soon as I finished that sentence it was like a robot regurgitating words "I need your VIN number to order any parts". I was like "its just crystal crey metalic paint", then I made the mistake of saying "or CGM" to wich I recived a blank stare. Again he was like "I need your VIN number... blah, blah, blah".

Again im like "I have the paint code as well..." AS he rudely inturputed me with the same BS as b4 "VIN #, BLAH BLAH IM A IGNORANT COW"

At this point Im pretty pissed and Im still trying to inform him that not only is he retarted and should be able to find it without the VIN (as I had called another dealership to see if they had it and all I had to say was "CGM touch up paint") So I told him "my car is also in for service right now, so you already have my VIN, just go look for it ether manualy or in the service information." His responce: "Well you will have to come back with the VIN number..."

Moron...

Subaru Stars Vin Pro's

I needed to get new keys made for my car, long story but I needed to get them from the dealer, Dealer said fine, bring proof of ownership & the VIN. I couldn't show the registration (it's part of the long story) but I did have the title. I was warned I would have a 50/50 chance of being able to get the keys made, lucky for me the right key info was avaliable because I had the VIN! Apparently back in 1993 the dealers were in charge of recording the key information, and not all the dealers were good about that. Now days Subaru does that automatically and the dealers don't have to worry about it anymore. I was very lucky!

SWEEET!! now I can go order keys for YOUR car. (not that I ever would) but I have the information I need now. I can go to the DMV and for $5 find out your name and address. Then go to the local dealership and get a copy of your keys. I am not a "tin hat" wearer. But i do know that if they need the VIN number so that they know when my car was made, I can look on the inside of my drivers door and find the same info for them. Holy sh!+ I only have to provide them with 4 digits instead of 16!

Uh, no the dealer made sure I brought proof of ownership as well, not just the vin number. If I hadn't had photo ID and the title I wouldn't have been able to get the keys.

Good for you!

Now all you need to do is get Rons registration and drivers license and you can have a key cut for this car! BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

BTW the VIN easily visible in the lower left corner of the windshield.
