Default notchy 6 speed

03 wrx with a 04 sti trans. low mileage but im not sre exactly how much under 50k. after driving around for awhile yesterday when it was hot as hell out it got kinda notchy for all the gears and would have a light grind going into 4th unless i babied it or revmatched it. dont know what kind of fluid is in the trans but its at the right level. smells burnt and ****ty though so im going to change that. what kind should i use?

i also just changed to a rs hood so im not sure if it could have anything to do with heat since i dont have the scoop dumping cold air down the back of the engine bay anymore. anybody run into this problem before? it shifted fine this morning after it sat and cooled down all night.

Yeah, I'd start by changing the fluid. There's a whole thread around here somewhere about fluids for the 6MT.

I personally have had good luck with Motul Gear 300. Others use Subaru Extra-S. There are also a host of other good/decent fluids.

re: tranny fluids. in many threads, i've read that you shouldn't mix-in shockproof gear oil (as it might clog the pump). not sure if your transmission has a pump.

What's the mileage on the gear oil? People don't change their gear oil often enough.

probably about 23k. the body only has 36 on it and the guy i bought it from said he swapped in the 6speed around 13k. and theres a receipt from the subie dealer for a trans so it should have been new at that point.

how often should it be changed? some autocross use mostly street driven but i am pretty hard on it and making more power then stock
