Question What is the best exhaust/muffler out there?

Hi everyone. Hope you're all having as good a week as I am.

I contacted Dale Teague in regards to his exhaust systems that he's selling. But I may as well ask here too just to get a 2nd/3rd/20th opinion.

What is the best exhaust system for the Impreza? Not what sounds the best, but the best overall. I am looking more towards performance than deafening sound. The reason: deafening sound + high schooler = $100 less to spend on car. It's so easy to track my car already. Why provoke the cops? Well, besides the obvious.

Seriously though...I have considered the Dunk, RS, and Stromung and even the Remus, and the Brospeed. Even looked at the Borla. No Scoobysport for me, though. I'd rather stick a pulley or something first.

Basically, I'm looking for a stainless steel muffler that will not get that rust/rustlike junk on it and that doesn't look too out of place. I like the dual tip, and I hear it looks good, but I've also heard some crappy things about that Stromung. The Dunk seems to be far more critically acclaimed and Mr. Teague is closer to me (no shipping and a road trip. woohoo!).

Let me know your thoughts.

Just installed a Stromung dual-tip. The fit and finish was fine, despite problems I had read about. It has a nice low exhaust note, and really snarls at 3k.

i see that you have already ruled the scoobysport out, but i'd like to give you some input on it anyway. i have a scoobysport silencer with rallispec's midpipes etc. the car lost no low end power. the tip is very understated, only slightly larger then stock: although it's not tapered like the stock one. the noise is also very managable, keep the revs low around town and you'd be fine. you won't be setting off any car alarms even at WOT (unlike my friend's medallion). if the lads from cherry hill ever sort out a turbo kit i think this exhaust will complement it nicely.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

What I was really wondering is how the Stromung will hold up. I hear it has a problem with rusting and if such is the case I don't want to pay 350 for a rustbox.

As for the Scoobysport...well, the problem lies in cost and noise. But in a perfect world, it'd already be installed.

Thanks for your help.

Before you buy, wait until my borla catback is installed. It's a 2 1/4" midpipe plus muffler, all stainless and for 354.- only.
Fred (Michigan) has it and likes it, FMDeadrick has a borla muffler and it sounds really good. Why spend 340.- on a mild steel muffler?
I will get it monday (that sucks...)and then post the results.

The Borla catback system, from Borla, has been reported to be 2", not 2.25" and is not stainless. Check out some posts from Nativo. Apparently it's also quite loud.

I bought a univeral borla turbo muffler, a stainless resonated tip and stainless high flow resonator, and had a local shop fabricate 2.25" piping to match. I'm very impressed with the sound and performance. Noticable but not obtrusive. I can still carry on conversations without it being annoying. And not too expensive.

You can get the muffler from carparts.com, with rebate for something like $72, I think the part is 40652. There's at least three people on this board who have done the same thing and are happy with the results. I used the extra resonated sections to keep it quieter and am very very pleased with the results and price. Good luck whatever you decide.

BTW, a Borla catback system like I got would be loud, effective for power, and cost less than $200 US. That's assuming 2.25" catback installed by local muffler shop.

This does not include a tip (prices vary), or resonator (if you want it a bit quieter). These two items, are not expensive. I bought really nice round resonated stainless tip for $46US and stainless resonator for about $40US. Still less than $300US total for full catback power!

I bet it will look something like this:

Except I have a piece of 3" 'School Bus' aluminized exhaust pipe for a tip.

Let me know the results, Marius.

Where can you order the Borla catback over the net?

Cool

Thanks for all the tips. The Borla is looking pretty darn good...$300 for a catback? I must be dreaming!

Still haven't heard back from Mr. Teague on the exhaust question, but when I do I'll compare what I've read and what it'll cost me and make a decision.

Thanks again.
