Default Blue only for first STi allocation???

Sorry if this is WTLW and also warning: this is from a dealer, so here goes:

Just talking to the dealer and he said that according to his info, every initial shipment of STis to dealers will be the Blue color only. Then as time goes on, into late 2003, the other three colors will be made available.

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

once press are done with them??
(remember that garage full of blue STis???)

my dealer (grayson knoxville) told me that they will be allocating in color groups. He said he wasn't sure but that was what he heard.

I've heard the first lot will be silver and blue, with black and whit following closely.
I want blue, so I'me set either way.

does anybody know if the pre-orders affected the first allocation? i.e. did subaru get a lot of pre-orders for blue cars and manufacture accordingly?

On the "My dealer" thread, my dealer still maintains that he is being told absolutely nothing and has no information or literature of any sort, no idea when the car is coming out, no idea of any wheel color choices, etc. I'm not sure whether he's just honest or I'm going to get left behind despite being #2 for the car. Really, when I hear about the guy that has a VIN number already, I feel a little disappointed in my experience so far. Every call (no more than once every two weeks since they act like I'm hassling them) results in "No, no information at all. I'm sure you have more from the internet than we have."

Oh yeah, and the other dealer in town (1) has a bad rep, and (2) is also a Mitsubishi dealer and badmouths the STi at every opportunity, while really pushing the EVO (multiple salespeople, so it isn't just one experience). I wish an undercover SOA rep would go in and try to order an STi from them.

Just came from my dealer (the one with 26 STI's being prepped for the press) and according to the manager they will be sold as demos when the press are done with them (god help you if you end up with one of these beaten cars unknowingly!)

I think thousands of miles on the odometer would be a give away.

Typically they call those 'Program Cars'.

I'll take one...with a 15% discount off invoice, choice of body & wheel color, fresh tires and a full factory warranty.

GM does this all the time.

You know, that's pretty scary...I just called my dealer today and he said those exact words almost verbatum!!

I wouldn't worry too much about it though. The guys I'm dealing with are good guys and I know a bunch of people who have bought Subarus from them and are 100% happy. I'm not sure what to make of this VIN number stuff myself. I figure either:
1) This guy is hosing all of us just to make us jealous.
2) Some dealers are more proactive than others; meaning they are calling Subaru and pestering them for info. Subaru obviously proved they can keep a secret with the STi as living proof. They are probably keeping things under tight wraps until 100% of the details are ironed out. Does this mean our dealers (w/o VIN #'s) won't get us our car? Highly unlikely. They will probably come around once production starts and Subaru is 100% behind them.

So, I wouldn't sweat it. Worst case: if you can't get the car from the first dealer, you'll probably be able to get the same car (VIN tag and all) from another. I'm pretty confident I will see my Blue STi w/ silver wheels in August...

those press cars go to the car graveyard in the sky or to non road use type of poeple (ala Gary Sheehan's WRX racecar)

I don't believe they are allowed to resell/retitle those press cars as road cars, are they?

Program cars can't have the EPA waiver sticker under the hood. Typically the "early" press cars have that.

The WRXs used for the ride-n-drive (which were production cars without the EPA exemption sticker) were indeed turned into "program cars" for sale to SOA employees etc.

So, just look under the hood.

Yep...that would be the exception.
But then the dealer would never have the car to sell if that were the case.

Your main worry is to look out for high miles and 'ageing' of the car.
