Similar form factor, but I think the TurboSmart is actually smaller. The piston design is completely different though. The Forge has a much larger area on the top of the piston than the bottom. The TurboSmart has a piston that is essentially straight up and down (similar to most VTA and 50/50 BOV's). I think the TurboSmart might be a bit quieter.

I love the TS Konpact, I went with it just because it's quiet. How do you like it compared to the hybrids?

It appears to be the same piston design as the hybrids that I had (but different than the Forge). The only difference is that it has a lighter spring that allows it to be open at idle. It also only has one vent (recirculating) so it vents air approx twice as slowly as the hybrids.

I think if you want the ultimate in response (closed at idle, and vents a lot of air when it opens) then a BOV is the way to go. Especially ones with large vent ports like the Tial Q or TurboSmart Race Port. But even most 50/50 valves will flow a lot more than the recirculating valves.

The downsides are that the car usually has some compressor surge (due to the valve being completely closed at idle) and also backfires and possible stalling. With proper valve tuning you can minimize this, but it is always there to an extent. If I were blow through MAF or speed density I would probably use a BOV.

It's kind of a double edged sword. If you want response, you have to deal with some of the downsides (flutter and rich shifts). For most people, I still think the Forge is probably the best choice. But I think the TurboSmart Kompact does just as well, and has a similar price. I could see it getting more and more popular.

^^ Nice car! Subscribed due to extreme details and reviews. Love it!

Btw, have you considered the Synapse DV? I'm running it on my 08 STi and I love it. Great sound, not too loud, fully recirculated, and has an extremely fast response time. Synapse Engineering makes great products IMO. I'm also considering their EWG.

I just looked at their site and saw the new DV series. I hadn't seen that one before. I'll have to look into it. I had looked into their older version for a while, but everything seemed more like a marketing pitch than real info. The design seems interesting, though.

The marketing thing seemed to have occurred in recent videos. They have a pretty cool older video of testing the DV:
Also there's other older videos where their lead engineer disassembles the valves and explains their mechanism. I dug around for a while and I saw dyno graphs on EVO forums (the evo guys are all over them) where someone dynoed before and after install. And it turns out that he made more top end power after install due to a leaky stock BPV. Now I know that our BPVs aren't very leaky by nature and its use on a Stage 2 setup is limited. I still like their design. I mounted mine in Pull Mode. You probably would have more use their BOV, though.

Yeah, those videos are still just marketing, IMO. They don't really show anything. 15hz with basically 0 lift doesn't impress me much. All you can hear is the control solenoid clicking. Coming from an engineering background and also a lot of experience with paintball, this seems pretty mundane. Paintball guns operate at pressures 5x-25x higher than most turbo'd cars, have valves that move ~1" per cycle, cycle 15-25 times per second, and last just as long as this "test".

The options for connecting that valve seem like they'd be fun to play with. I wouldn't mind toying around with one. I don't think I'd spend $250+ on it though. But maybe someday...

any tips on doing this? did you use a bleeder kit or just have someone pump the brakes? stock brake lines wrenched off easy peasy?

I bought a hand pump bleeder kit, but since I had so much help we just did it the old fashioned way pumping the brakes. It went fine. Nice and easy.

I was really worried about the stock brakes lines. I did buy a set of 5 sided flare nut wrenches for $10 and they made it really easy. It took a good amount of force but the nuts broke loose without rounding off or anything. No issues. Went very smoothly. Here's the wrenches I got:

Can't beat that. I don't know if I've ever bought a tool for 10 bucks! Actually I had to buy a 10mm 1/4 inch socket for 10 bucks. Damn Mac Tools.

If I may ask, where did you source the new block? Did you assemble it from all the diff listed parts or did you buy it pre-assembled?

Not really when you use something 20 times a day. If I used those wrenches you bought at work they would probably last a week. Just like car parts, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, to a point. I'll have to admit, 95% of my hand tools are cheap-o crap from Harbor Freight. I wrench on my car a bit, but I'm no full time mechanic. Harbor Freight has a lifetime warranty and they're stuff costs a fraction of the big name brands. So far all the tools have done their job well. On things other than hand tools, I will generally opt for higher quality.
