Default any cons to trading in 08 wrx for 05 sti?

looking for a cheap 05 sti to hopefully have lower payments. just curious if there would be any cons to doing so?

yeah... when were the ware and tare parts replaced last?

i ran into this when i bought my 06 sti used. i got a great deal but then over the next 2 years i had to replace the clutch, tires, brakes, installed coil-overs cause the suspension was clunking. Which if i had just bought a new car or one with those replaced in the long run i paid a lot more for the car. ohhhh and my oil pick up tube fail and had to replace the engine with in 5 months of owning the car too

but i loved that car sooooo much. damn STi being so awesome!

ouch, well i just need to get away from this high car payment for awhile.. just had a hunch that an older sti would be cheaper, but it would be my dream car really.

But if you wait and find one that was well taken care of, it may be worth it. Of course you're going to have to replace brake pads, tires, a clutch at some point, etc. That's what comes with owning a car. If you can find one that was well taken care of though, you may not have to worry about the engine issue or other large mechanical issues.

I just looked at KBB.

In a trade, your car is worth $16k and an 05 STi is worth $24k.

Your plan will not work.

You can, however join a credit union and refinance your car. That will, of course extend how long you have to pay for it, but if you need to reduce your payments, that's the best way to go.

You've got to be kidding me on those numbers. No way is anyone in the right mind going to pay twenty four thousand dollars for a 8 year old sti. I'd say an 05 sti with 80k miles would be right around the 15-16k mark. Honestly I'd take a look to see how much your insurance would go up, and I can't imagine payments being much different.

Why not goto a dealer and see what they can do? We cannot comment on how this would go, far too many variables.

You're free to go to kbb.com. I used an 08 WRX sedan with 60k miles trading in and an 05 STi with 70k miles as a buy from a dealer. He talked about trading and that's how dealers work. You trade your car for the trade in number (sounds reasonable, right) and you pay dealer retail.

Sure....you can negotiate, but I don't see where anyone would walk away paying less for the STi than what the WRX is worth.

You guys would be extremely surprised the prices they are in the NW. Good condition 04-05 sti's are selling for $20K+ right now, with 06-07's selling for as much as $29k....POS high milage (like 120k+...) 04-05's are still selling for $18-19k around here.

Here's a small sampling of private owner sales - keep in mind dealers with these cars are asking much more...

http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/cto/3425451782.html - 05 sti with 87k $22,500
http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/3424681285.html - 05 sti with 66k $21,000

Cons? If it has higher mileage, it's going to nickle and dime you to death. Example:

Bought my '04 STi (84k miles I think) around a year and a half ago (can't believe I've had it that long already), thinking that I will have a pretty reliable car to make up for the payment. Ohh how wrong I was. First thing that went was the a/c. High pressure line started leaking (250 bucks IIRC) after owning it a month. A few days later, the PS pump took a crap. Bought a used one for 100 bucks. Fast forward around a month later, the high pressure PS line started leaking, which leaked onto the downpipe and caused smoke to pour out of the hood, very embarrasing LOL. 200 odd some dollars later it was back on the road. Then the struts started to clunk, and they continue to do so. After that, it pooped a ringland on cyl. 3. Installed new motor, then an o-ring in the a/c system started leaking so the a/c is inoperable again, and at the same time the radiator cap started leaking as well and it almost ALMOST overheated. I was able to catch it in time. And let's not forget recently the battery taking a crap, and the tires are due for replacement, as well as the annoying strut clunk that I'm going to live with until I get aftermarket wheels/better tires, and can afford coilovers. I already have a blouch Dominator 2.0 on the way, and I'm now going to have to buy a top feed conversion and bigger injectors, not to mention the exedy replacement clutch that will need to be replaced after I get the car off the dyno LOL. It's a sickness. Trade your current car for an STi because you really want one, not because it seems economical, because I can assure you my friend, the STi will not save you any money whatsoever.

I agree. Last year when I looked at STI's around here the 04-07 era was 19-26K used with around 100K miles and some of them were clearly beat on.

I wouldn't buy a used sti unless you know the full history. Buying a "cheap" sti is asking for trouble. Why not just refinance your 08 and enjoy having a newer ride without surprises. Buying used Stis is a risk to begin with

Bc it is an STi! Those three letters make us WRX owners look outside and think, maybe I should of just bought a used STI/STi instead for lower payments.

I've run the numbers often and after sales tax and the fact that finding an unmolested used STI/STi is impossible I've given up.

I just bought an 06 STI with 100k miles and a rebuilt motor. In the month I've had it, I've had to replace all of the ac system orings, the radiator blew up on me, and now the power steering is going out.. im beginning to think my old 02 wrx with 200k miles on it was more reliable. And definitely cheaper.

join the club, i wanted to find a used unmolested 2007 STI before I bought my first WRX. could not find one at all near me when i lived in alaska so i bought a 2009 silver WRX off the lot in 2008. Then i traded it in after i ordered my 2012 because i hated the way how my 2009 looked so boring and barely any different than a base impreza.now im happy. the car suits me perfectly.

The grass is not greener on the other side. I would not waste your time trading. enjoy what you have. When you need a new car then buy a NEW STI if you have to have it. USED CARS SUCK PERIOD. Good luck and be safe. remember......you pay for what you get.

Really we are all just speculating and can't tell you what will happen if/when you find the sti that you speak of. The first question is if you are upside-down on your current car (meaning that you owe more than it's worth)? Even if you do manage to get an older sti with a lower payment it will likely cost you more in the long run with higher insurance rates and higher maintenance costs.
