Could you not just put a new 3rd gear in and just run a tune with alittle less power? Even at say 400whp Im sure its a blast.

Man, it's so interesting how the gear set got chewed up like that. I'm new to transmission work but I give it a ton of credit to not sheering off sooner.
Any word on the rebuild, eta? |

Not to thread jack, but my 3rd went out in my 07.. Scary experience. Downshifted from 4th to 3rd the slow down on a slight decline on a icy hill, then I just heard a quiet but rapidly getting loud whirring noise then , BOOM. Metal popcorn sound.

Yeah, surprisingly enough. It was me and 3 other people in the car, so there was added weight. The transmission was pretty NEW, it had been replaced 2 months prior for an exploding center diff from the previous owner. But yeah.. Just a simple downshift to help me slow down blew my third.
On topic: Xluben, your hatch is one of the "Power Three" hatches currently on nasioc. I would hate to see you quit and get rid of her, but I also understand all too well where you are coming from. |

A 6 speed swap can be done for around $3k...although I prefer the 5 speed gearing

Agreed Xluben, I just got my car back and going to be right at 400WHP after my 600 mile breakin. The swap is very costly and a serious pain in the ass. PPG gears are now running what, $4000 alone, you are looking at a rebuilt andrewtech tranny for close to $6500-$7000. The Tomei gear sets are like $2500 (have no idea what these even are), and the rallyspec syncro meshes are like $4200. So I know of no STI swap that is less than $8000+ not including new wheels etc.

I'm wondering how much the stock 5-speed would run. Would you really have to replace the entire thing?

if you've shy-ed away from the swap in the past because of your above confusion, feel free to shoot me a PM. i'd be glad to help you with the correct information and knowledge for the swap. we have also created itemized lists of parts and costs for those interested in the 6-speed swap in their GH/GE that is available on 3gwrx, as well. |

Agreed, thats what I meant. Maybe others will, but I wouldnt want to put an old tranny in my11, I know I know, but thats just my own OCD issues. Agree it can be done for cheaper than I stated:
#1 - I dont have the time, work 70 hrs a week. #2- I dont totally have the knowledge base. #3- I would have to use my buddies garage and lift for some time. I personally would just box up my tranny and send it off to Andrewtech and have Akuma reinstall. Im old (40) and tired of wrenching on critical parts. I really appriciate the invite to see what the swap takes and I will PM you. |
