Default Didnt pass Aircare :(

Well I took my car to aircare today and turns out I'm running high on Hydrocarbons and Oxides of nitrogen, both are high in significant amounts.

I have a cobb high flow catted downpipe and stock sti catback. I also have a non catted perrin uppipe. When I went to do the test I put my car into fuel economy mode (via cobb accessport) thinking it would help (and maybe it did for all I know). I really thought the stock sti catback and cobb catted downpipe would be good enough. I was very wrong. Any suggestions on how to make this pass without too too much work

Right now I have the stock sti downpipe in my storage locker, but im not sure if putting it on will really help or not. Also Im thinking of maybe just putting the stock sti downpipe on (so my exhaust is stock except for the uppipe), and reverting the ECU to back to stock mode. I dunno though.

EDIT:
Oh ya, and my OBD said "reject" then came up with the statement: "The following monitors were not set: catalyst, evaporative, oxygen sensor"
There were no Codes.
After doing a bit of reading my OBD may have been not set because I switched maps and didnt drive it for long enough (I have no clue though).

You should try just flashing back to stock (unless you are missing one or more O2 sensors) that would be your best bet, or to install the old downpipe and any missing sensors go stock and retest, it's only once every two years so it's not that much pain.

That could be your problem right there. The rediness monitors have to be set otherwise they wont pass you. How badly did you fail on the actual test? or did they even test you after plugging in your car and getting that reading?

They run your car on the rollers if you fail the monitor reading test. From my experience, replacing your OEM up and down pipe and having proper working O2 sensors should get you a pass. Remember next time they will put your car on the rollers even if you pass the monitor readings.

They had to do a driving test and put me on the rollers since the OBD failed (thats what he said anyways). I failed quite badly

Here are the results:

Hydrocarbons: 0.37 my reading = 0.93--fail
CO 6.21 my reading= 5.58--pass
NOx 0.93 my reading= 2.04--fail

Ya, im thinking to try and just take out the accessport all together and drive it for a while on the highway and then go back for a retest. If that doesnt work (only $23 to try again), then im thinking ill try to replace the downpipe (which is a hell of a lot more work than trying the first method). What do you think?

Unless the cobb catted downpipe also removes one of the downpipe cats, in which case im running it with only one cat and thats probably contributing largely to the problem.

Sorry, so your saying that with your experience even if you replace the oem up and downpipe with aftermarket ones like I have done I should get a pass?

You might want to check if your front O2 sensor is burnt out from the non catted uppipe.

Yes. For example. I'm running ecutek with a larger Turbo with supporting mods. I reinstalled my OEM up and downpipe and got new O2 sensors and passed. I believe the front sensor helps determine the fuel mixture. So a burnt out one could run you very rich. Causing higher hydro carbon readings.

I don't know if there is a test you can perform on a O2 sensor but I failed with a OEM up and downpipe. And passed after replacing the sensor.

hmm, something to think about for sure. I may just end up going back to a stage 1 on my accessport and switching back to the stock exhaust just to be sure.

If the OBD has any codes that is an automatic fail from what I have heard. Clear the codes drive for a while you should be good to go. If some things are turned off using the AP then put the stock map on and put a half a liter of meth into a full tank of 94 and boom you should pass. Last two cars I have brought through air care they only did the OBD2 if no codes = pass.

no, air care is still on...

OP: I guess it's your stg 2 map that makes those monitor not ready, it's too late now and you can only swap back to the stock DP for the retest as when those monitor are not ready they will request dyno run instead of just OBDII scan...and with just a high flow cat in the COBB DP, it will be quite a bit of work to make it pass...

and you don't have to worry about up-pipe...

if the code is emission related, then it will be automatic fail; if it's not emission related, i think they let you to run the test with up to 3 codes...

I worked at Aircare before, I've never seen anything pass with any codes.

So best thing, unmarry your COBB a few days before going to aircare... drive around... if you can find someone who has a OBD reader. then go in and get it tested...

BUT since the thread starter already failed under a driving test, the re-test will be another driven test.

Good luck.

maybe i am wrong, but one friend of mine had a CEL related to knock sensor i believe (it was quite awhile ago, maybe 2 or 3 years). He went for air care anyways, didn't get an automatic pass with obd2 scan and the inspector told him they can do a driving test if there is non emission related CEL...

i just looked it up on aircare.ca and they say it's automatic fail as well...so i guess OP should go by that...

if its not an emissions or even engine related code, could a car pass?

Thanks for all the input. I think my only chance now is to take out the cobb downpipe and replace it with the oem sti fully catted one and then im going to unmarry the accessport for a while and just drive it around in complete stock mode. I dont know what else I can do other than that that really guarantees me a pass. I really dont want to do the uppipe as that is just one huge hassle especially as I live in a condo.

dasnowman- I would do that but I think now they are going to do the driving test regardless if any OBD readiness monitors are set or not next time, and Im pretty sure its mostly due to the cobb downpipe only having one high flow cat. I dont know how these codes showed up in the first place but I think it was due to the fact that I had just switched to the fuel economy mode before going into the test and I hadnt driven my car for long enough.

trdartz- would you suggest that I switch out the downpipe as well as unmarry the accessport as I have to do the driving test again anyways.

alan ling- I think this may be the last year for aircare as there contract runs out in 2011 apparently, and they're up for renewal so they may or may not get it is my understanding.

Few more questions:

Where is the second O2 sensor located? one comes out from the manifold, accessed thru the front passenger wheel well (correct me if im wrong) and the other im not sure? also,
There are 2 EGT (1 in the uppipe and 1 in the downpipe) correct? My perrin uppipe has this deleted...would this cause a problem with readings? Thanks

Thanks, just found a nice little diagram that helps me also see why having the cobb downpipe may not be helping the situation (as now i have only 1 of 3 cats and its highflow). Ill keep ya updated on what happens.

Aircare is a complete gong show some days. Had a gf's car which ran completely clean OEM fail a test because the guy in front of her fouled the tailpipe sensor they were using with the huge plume of sticky black smoke out of the tailpipe of his 1980ish dodge pickup.

If you replace your O2 sensors your car may run better regardless of aircare so its a pretty good idea one way or another.

Also it's the front sensor that usually fouls up.
