Almost forgot to post the video of me shooting steel at 400 with the .308 while I was on vacation:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10330532/steel400yds.MOV
That range is near my folks' place and has berms every 100 yards out to 400 with MOA steel swingers at 200 and beyond. It has good covered benches and has the machinery for movers when they run club shoots. It's been deserted every time I go, and if there aren't any events going on then it's free to shoot as long as you clean up after yourself. I still drop some cash in the donation box because it is really a clean range.

Dude that's awesome. Is that the place near the DPMS facility? I'd still like to go there just to tell them thanks for all the quality gear.

No, I wasn't at Del-Tone in that video. I was going to stop there on my way through MN but it only has 200 yards and most of my friends were out the first weekend of rifle season. The range in the video is in the UP of Michigan in the middle of nowhere (which explains pretty much all of the UP).

Speaking of deer season, while I was stopped at my folks' old house (they're getting it ready to sell, I was there to take some stuff with me back to TX) my brother got two deer within a few minutes by bow. He got a 10-pt buck and a doe in the front yard (which is several acres of woods). Good thing I had stopped by because it was nearly dark and I was able to help drag, clean, and hang them before we left. Too bad I couldn't take any venison with me

add another Savage 110 .338LM to the flock

only had time to put 100 bulk 250gr rounds down range so far as Berger bullets were scarce the last few months.

have 200 rounds reloaded now and going out to Best of the West next weekend (weather permitting) to have another go at the 1km with reloaded ammo. anyone know local supplier for H1000 or Retumbo powders? testing both and I'm out after reloading what I had

Make sure to re-torque the rail. Almost everyone with a 110BA (myself included) have shot loose the factory/smith torque on that rail after a few hundred.

For the DFW folks I may be out at Top Gun on Saturday morning. I didn't get out last week because I saw the forecast for this weekend.

Haven't heard anything more on the suppressor shoot, I'll have to stir that pot a bit. I contacted the ATF yesterday, though: my Form 4 went pending in September so only have to wait 3-4 more months

FYI I talked to terry out at top gun and he says sat mornings are packed these days. 11-2 seems to be the sweet spot if you want a bench. Prone is usually full too according to him.

Probably because deer season is on and people are sighting in. There were some early ones out there when I went back in September. I did want to get out there to qualify for a 2013 membership. Also just noticed that FMJ is no longer allowed at that range so maybe that will mean a few less people showing up.

Wow, no more fmj? That'll probably cut down on the ARs out there. He has tried to keep it more for precision shooters.

Some, yes. I've seen some pretty killer precision ARs out there, though. Pretty sure they were shooting SMK reloads. I recall the other RSO, can't recall his name right now, mentioning that they were getting pressure from neighbors to nix FMJ. When he mentioned that I looked around and wondered "what neighbors?". It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I'd be more concerned with a noob and a .338 LM slinging something over the far berm than I would a FMJ from an AR missing a berm. Oh well, I'll just tuck the case of .308 FMJ I have to the back of the closet and take it out if/when I go to Gibson's.

I agree about the FMJ. Supposedly there shouldn't be any noobs shooting over that far berm if they haven't qualified out that far. That being said I have seen people struggle to hit the steel at 300. That kind of scares me.

I think you were out there with me that day when some noob showed up with a savage 110ba in 338. He had no idea what the hell he was doing, and really had no business shooting that gun.

Guess if I want to shoot my AR locally I have to go to gibsons or elm fork.

Yeah, I am so glad I stayed away from the .338 LM. That guy spent more on a single box of 20 then I did on 100 reloads for my .300 WM.

There was another interesting character at the range today that said he had a 110BA .338 LM on layaway. I've gotta think that if you can't just buy it outright (it's "cheap" for a .338 LM) then how are you going to afford to put glass on it and shoot it? Although I actually bought my Nightforce scope first and then chose a rifle for it

I qualified out to 500 with the .308 today. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, but I still have some work to do. I did have some fun lobbing subs at the 200 yard swinger. I think I missed it twice in 15 shots which is pretty good for subs. I also think I figured out the issue with the .300 WM; it was stringing vertically so the powder load may not be ideal. Instead of a ladder I think I'll try a 5-shot group test around some lighter loads.

Had fun out at badlands yesterday. Also had one of the better shooting days I've ever had. I switched to 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match 7.62x51 so the purpose of going out there was to get the new dope out to a grand. I have to say my rifle loves this ammo, and I probably won't be switching again.

At 100 the group to the bottom right was first 3 shots to see if I had to re-zero. I re-zero'd and shot 3 shot middle group. Adjusted turrets and fired one more right thru the middle to make sure I didn't mess it up while tightening the turrets up.

At 200 it was kinda meh. I could make the excuse that there was a plant that was obscuring my view a bit, but it was still sub MOA so i'll take it.

300 is where I struggled the last time I was out there. Sub 1" group at 300. The shot you see to the bottom right was the initial sighting shot. Since it was so far out I made adjustments after 1 shot and the following 3 made the group you see.

Bottom to top 100, 200, 300. I can't recommend my setup enough. Especially for the price. Included a quarter for reference. After looking at this more I could probably stand to adjust the turrets another 1/4-1/2 MOA in elevation.

How much elevation did you need for those at 1000?

A lot more than I thought I would. I'd have to double check, but I believe I was at 35. I used 36 for the 168's. Some others I know are in the 30-32 range with 175s so that is where I expected to be. Not sure why mine was that much different. I hit with 34.5, but it was a few inches from the bottom of the silhouette.

It was 35. Here is my drop table.
100 - 0
200 - 2
300 - 4.5
400 - 7.5
500 - 11
600 - 15
700 - 19
800 - 23.5
900 - 28.5
1000 - 35

and my ACR did some pretty amazing things out to 600 yards too.... but i didnt record it... oh well...

russ, next time come down on friday and we will shoot all day saturday..oh and me and the captain are looking for dates for assault carbine.. and i think we will have enough people.

and the hits russ made at 1k yards were about 6-7 inches from the bottom of the target but they were pretty tight.

Russ and I have been talking about the carbine class up there. I'm in for the one in June. I got paid yesterday, so I'll have the money to reserve my spot.

Unless y'all are talking about one of their custom private group classes, which I could be down for too.
