Any Handspring users here?
I'm looking for a PDA. The Handspring Visor Deluxe has caught my eye, just because of the unlimited potential it has. WOndering what other people's thoughts were.

Pete -- I'd have to agree. I have palm IIIX
it's good, and reliable. but if I were to buy today... that's the way to go. Upgrade central. They're are 2 issues that I know of though. 1. Upgrades existing - There has been a ton of talk regaurding the upgrades, but I haven't seen any of them in existance, but that was a while ago. 2. Color - color ones are nearly on the way. (from other venders) So expect one soon from them too. ok, 3 things 3. availability - those suckers have been hard to get your hands on, that might have changed in the months that I haven't been keeping up with it. other than that... the OS is great. So many prog's avaible. So flexible too just my opinion AO |

Paul: I was going to stay quiet, but after that introduction, I'm compelled to respond .
Pete: The Visor Deluxe is the one to get. Don't bother waiting for a color version, as the higher cost and shorter battery life will make it an unrealistic purchase. Just compare with WinCE and the new color Palm. If I can find the time, there are several Springboard plug-ins that I want to design and build. In the meantime, you can do all sorts of research on it at http://www.visorcentral.com. I have an orange Visor Deluxe, and Kris has a graphite Visor that he wants to perform an 8Mb memory swap on. I have experience with soldering surface mount chips. In the Kingdom of the Blind, the One-Eyed is King. -WaC Wayne |

The Palm V is smaller and thinner, so if you're looking for something you can *easily* slide into your pocket along with your wallet, you may want to consider it.
In my right pocket, I keep my wallet, keys and Palm V. In my left pocket, I keep my cell phone and car keys. When it's cold out and I'm wearing a jacket, the Palm and cell phone go into the jacket pockets. When I go on business trips and have to meet clients in a suit, the Palm definitely is more professional looking than the snazzy translucent Visor case. That said, I love the visor's expansion capability and would rather have that if I had the time to hack on it. But I don't, so I use the PalmV and have not "modded" it. That said, I work for Compaq, so I have to plug this: http://www5.compaq.com/products/handhelds/pocketpc/ Hey, it runs Linux - try doing *that* on your Visor! nyah nyah nyah! Actually, I helped with the Linux port - http://www.handhelds.org. Okay, I'm done being a nerd for now. Back to your regularly scheduled car talk... Wayne,
Why stop at his right pocket, you may as well reach into his left and grab his keys, too. -Pete |

My mentioning of the color units was 2 pronged... 1. if you want color wait 2. result of color devices being available the cost of none color units should go down. AO [This message has been edited by m750 (edited September 27, 2000).] |

Visor Deluxe!
This is the way to go! I made the mistake of not having enough cash for the deluxe, and now I have to have Wayne solder in 8MB of memory - but actually that will end up being LESS then the Visor Deluxe. $170 = My 2MB Visor $40 = Memory upgrade $210 = TOTAL OR $250 = Handspring Deluxe 8MB is the only difference, and you're ready to go out of the box. Wayne and I are working on a OBD2 connector, and we might end up building a springboard module! Oh... and Macintosh is a religion, not an OS. - Kris |

Oooops almost forgot - The Compaq "thing" Lasts for 10 hours on batteries. I can get MORE then a month out of mine, and I use mine all the time.
But - yes it's cool that it runs Linux, an OS I could never quite be productive with... - Kris |
