Can't be afraid of trying something new
I always thought auto-x was for people who had nothing better to do on a Sunday. Sitting around maybe getting six 40sec. runs then baking in the sun all day as a course worker never appealed to me.
Things change, this damn driving genre has me, I'm hooked. I remember my first run sitting at the starting grid, stomach churning, thinking "I hope I don't stall". 40 sec. later I'm in the braking box heart pounding, adrenaline flowing through my veins feeling like my head was going to pop off( I think my helmet strap was to tight). If you haven't tried solo II/auto-x I would seriously recommend it. It is alot of fun and for the people on a budget it only cost around $35. There are no egos and everybody is there to help each other out.

Build a drift car and try that. It's even more addicting.

Solo II is wicked.
I thinks it's probably one of the the best ways for someone wanting to get a clear feel for maximizing traction and car control. It's inexpensive, informative, friendly and cooperative. But best of all, it's a total BLAST!!! In 1998, there was a Solo II race in downtown Squamish called, "Squamish Thunder in the Streets" I ran my '72 Corolla in it that year and I still have the dash plaque mounted. Great memories as it was a complete HOOT!! Jason T is right. You gotta try it. |

YEAA jason, glad to hear you are getting so much out of the auto-x's. I have to admit I haven't thought much about going to auto-x's... that is until I went and checked the results table and saw more Subarus than usual. I found myself starting to read up on classing and prep. so I will have to find out how the cones suit my driving style.
I guess I will take your advice and commit to trying something new myself! See ya at the next event. Also, you should consider what 007WRX said and check out drifting sometime. It's awesome for practicing car control at and beyond the limits of traction, and the wear on the car and tires is exaggerated. I could point you in the right direction or help you try it out if you aren't sure if it would be up your alley. - R.T. |
