Element Tuning's Hydra Nemesis 2.6 Tuning Tips
I want to help you guys with any specific questions you may have in regards to tuning the Hydra 2.6 (only) so please ask your questions here. What I may do is start the tuning guide with which ever questions you ask first.
Here are some basics: The first step in using your Hydra 2.6 is to connect to your Hydra so you can see the base map we've installed for you. Open the 2.6 software to tools/system tools/preferences: Here is how I like to set up my tuning software. What's critical is that you assign the correct COM port so the software can connect to your Hydra. Only use a RS232 Serial Port or a RS232 Serial Card (please don't bother asking me how to get your USB adaptor to work because they are just too problematic). You can copy exactly how I have my software setup if you like. Enabling the VE Substrings "AFR Error" is really great as it will tell you what percentage your fuel map is off by in the cruise areas. For instance if one of the load cells says 1.535 and you highlight that cell and click "Q" the Hydra will apply the 1.535% correction to that cell. The correction is based on what you have in your "Target AFR Table." Click "Save and Exit" to make these changes permanent. At this point you can start editing your map to calibrate your WB 02 sensor and the throttle. I will reserve some spots to continue with these tips. Thanks, Phil Element Tuning.com

I'm going to jump ahead a little farther than I want to get some basic tuning information out there. The key to editing the maps quickly is to know what the shortcut keys are.
One of the most important items in my opinion is the mass edit keys. use the "arrow" keys and then the "ctrl" key to highlight a section of fuel or timing cells for instance. Now all you have to do is hit "V (divide), M(multiply), A(add), or S(subtract) )" type in a value, say 1 and then hit "enter" and that values will be added, subtracted, etc to that group of highlighted cells. Editing one cell at a time is sometimes neccessary but often you will be working with an RPM range for instance that needs to be leaned out and these keys will be the fastest way to get to your target AFR for instance. I also always use the extrapolation keys, X and Y to smooth the maps or even to anticipate what the fuel map should be at 30 psi when I've only tuned the car to 15 psi so far. When tuning in injector pulse width the fuel map will look very linear from 0 psi all the way to 30 psi so using the "Y" extrapolation for load can really speeds tuning up. Let's say your fuel map is tuned up to 15 psi and you want to rough in the map all the way to 30 psi. Estimate what the 30 psi load cells will look like (copy the shape of the 15 psi cells but increase the fueling). Simply highlight the 0 rpm to 8300 rpm cells at 15 psi, then all the way to 30 psi. Select "Y" and a screen will pop up with how the changes will look. If you like what you see hit the "OK" button to make the changes permanent. More to come. you have been a great help so far, but i think tuning boost and the starting maps would be something to start with. its what i have been having the most trouble with and i imagine im not the only one. also any tips on hotkeys would be great!

How about a list of all the known quirks. I know it's very time consuming trying getting around some of these issues you may spend hours trying to fix only to be told "that's just the way it is".

how about cold starting. when its 80 out it starts great, when its 60ish and colder it chugs along at 1,200 rpm or so (target is 1,500) and vacuum is 12" or so compared to 20" normally. i tried adding and subtracting fuel and it makes no difference. after a couple minutes it just snaps right out of it and runs normal.

Post Start Enrichment: This is used to increase fueling right after the engine starts to help stabalize the idle. This settings varies quite a bit if you have an engine with cams, TGV deletes, porting, etc vs. a standard engine. Post Start Enrichment Decay: This how long you want the Post Start Enrichment to remain active the engine starts. Typically this is set to 60-120 seconds but decays the fuel enrichment over time. Phil,
I'm having some idle issues with a 2.5 hybrid in an 03 wrx. I am having issues getting my O2 sensor to work properly so i'm using an Innovate and have closed loop turned off. if I get the car to idle around 14.7 with the fans off, when the fans turn on it goes super lean. if I get the idle @ 14.7 with the fans on it drops to 12.5 to 13 when the fans turn off. what am I missing? |
