Passing Aircare with intake and full exhaust
Hi all,
I have a MY02 2.5 RS. Question: Will this setup pass aircare? I know I have a year until I have to do aircare I just don't want to keep my stock exhaust. I have no room for it Current Mods: - Ganza CAI/ K&N filter - TWE Header. In the next couple of weeks: - TWE Hi flow CAT - Borla Cat back. - Resonator (maybe) 2.5" dia piping because cams or a turbo may be in the distant future. Thanks for the Input Shawnrs

Find out if people with TWE highflow cats have passed california emissions.. if so you will pass here for sure.
Go to the NA forums and ask, if not use the "search" button. |

the header could be a problem... is it steel? at least with my old car, my ss header dissapated too much heat and the cat never got hot enough to pass aircare

Funny I did what "Happy Days" suggested and posted on the NA form. The discussion turned into anti Cali. Politician bitch fest.
Anyway. yes the Headers are SS but they have that TI coating them that is supposed to is reduce the heat transfer. Actually I have to look further into that. On TWE's web site the latest version of the header is black. Not polished looking like mine are. IS that the coating? Or is the finished product polished too? I really have to stop hiding behind my comouter screen and call them. However if any of you have a completely modified exhaust system from the 2.5l engine please let me know if you have any problems with Aircare and or Fuel consumption. Thanks ShawnRS ps I am really new to all this Modding the care stuff. So what maybe obvious to you might not be for me. Any info is helpful. |

The "unknown" factor here is your TWE headers. I have a PDM intake, with a K&N filter as well as a full Stromung catback. I have had no problems passing airscare. I don't know how your headers will affect aircare. As long as the exhaust gasses are hot enough to ignite your cats, you'll be fine. I'm assuming that you've got stock cats. Who knows what will happen with high-flow cats! Only way to find out for sure is to do the test!
Oh, one more thing - this goes for any car going for aircare. Make sure your car is nice and warm before you take the test. Go for a nice drive to make sure your cats are up to temperature. The worse thing you can do is take the test first thing in the morning when your car is cold. Cars are designed to run rich during first start-up to speed up the car getting up to temp. LaterZ! I don't know the BC limits, but I passed Ontario emissions with flying colours
with a full Brullen setup, cams, and CAI. most of the number were 1/10 of the limit. I would suspect that you shouldn't have any problems. For an extra measure of good luck, I ran 2-3 tanks of premium gas and injector cleaner, and as others have mentoined, make sure it is good and warm for the test. Good Luck...Stu |

SubaruStu did you get a ce light with your brullen headers and what did you do to correct it? I think if you don't have it reset, the inspectors here will see it when they hook up the obd scanner to the car.
But yeah make sure the car is nice and hot. Take it out on the freeway for a drive before going in for the test. Ken |

the problem is the lineups waiting for the test... any heat you've built up on the highway get's lost waiting in line

I guess you *could* drive around at highway speeds in 3rd gear - that'll get things hot in a hurry! As for the cats cooling off while waiting in line, yah, that happens to. Guess if you keep your revs up, that'll keep your cats hot! So much for saving the environment by "idling at a high rev". Anyone else find it scary when they attempt to "drive" your car on the AW-dyno?!? LaterZ! Darren!! |

oh didn't know that it would cool the cats driving on the highway. Maybe cause I've got a skid plate underneath. I usually keep it in 4th around 4000 rpms on lougheed. I think I'm one of the lucky ones then when it comes to the testers at aircare. They actually take it pretty easy on mine.

got around to putting in a DIY MIL eliminator and haven't had a cat inefficiency code since. I have had once or twice a slow response code, but it happened when cruising along at low rpms (2000-2500). I got the reader from OBD-2.com which hooks up to any PC or laptop. 10s and it's gone. Stu |

So you have a gravel guard (larger rally plate) under your car? I've been thinking about getting one with teh hopes of keeping the area around the headers protected from the air moving under the car. And for gravel road fun too, of course. ShawnRS |

The skid plate may not fit under your car with the headers as I believe they sit lower than stock headers. I think there's roughly 1/2 inch of gap between stock exhaust and plate. We can meet up and you can take a look if you want as I want to check out your headers as well.

I get my exhaust is roughly two weeks so maybe you could drop by Total and have a look while its on the lift. It'll be a Saturday, if they are open. If not I'll have to get off my lazy ass install it. ShawnRS |
