Okay, all the brake pads are in great shape, and we bled the brakes. So my question is- is the pedal supposed to be mushy, or is my master cylinder spent?

bleed the master cylinder first. a one man bleeder kit(jar0 is excellent for the rear brakes, you can watch the air come out, bleed a full bottle if not 2 each wheel

EDIT: Nevermind, 2500 for a motor....

You can buy a jdm EA82T motor for around 650, that's a whole lot easier than an ea -> ej motor swap!
