Default Need recommendations: cat-back exhaust for WRX

Hey everyone:

I had posted earlier about your opinions on a Tanabe exhaust, but I got a phone call today that Tanabe is completely out of stock, and there's no ETA on them. So now I need options...!

Thus, I'm now polling for your recommendations on cat-back exhausts that may meet the following requirements:

1) Deep, throaty sound. Like, would love if it growls. (most desired requirement)

2) Not much louder than an average exhaust. I don't want to wake the neighbors. (important requirement) I know this limits me, but that's totally fine.

3) Fits a '04 WRX wagon.

4) Installs with all the stock-sized gaskets and such so that I can stay in D-Stock for autocrossing.

5) Prefer a price range of $600 or less...

6) Stainless steel preferred, I guess because I don't really need titanium.

What it looks like in terms of shape, I don't care... as long as it's not Hey-Cop-Pull-Me-Over-Because-I-Simply-LOOK-Like-A-BadAss-Exhaust.

I also am not looking for ultimate performance to help my autocrossing. My understanding is that as long as I change it from stock, it'll probably help. So that's good enough for me because in my region, a D-Stock WRX has no chance of winning its class.

What I've heard so far:
- Husband has SPT exhaust. Is on the short list.
- Hubby's friend has a ProDrive exhaust, and it doesn't sound as deeply rumbly as the SPT for the same loud-factor.

What do you all think?

Well... you can get the axleback for under $600. But Id get a scoobysport. I have now owned perrin, borla, and bosal units. Heard and installed aps. And the scoobysport has owned them all.

You can stay in DS with a catback? I didnt know that...

Most every quality exhaust will give you that boxer rumble youre looking for. If money isnt a problem, Prodrive is your best bet IMO. Greddy Evo and Borla Hush are known as the quieter exhausts. TurboXS, Blitz are rather loud.

Good luck!

I'd agree with the Greddy Evo2. Nice deep sound but not too loud over stock.

Visit these two links and then decide. Bob in Wisconsin cannot describe what will best suit your needs. View the links above, search for sound clips, visit locals and hear what's available in person, and buy one. Think of exhausts as cake recipes. There are a million of them. Some good, some bad. What you like is what you like and no one can tell you what you will like. In the end, it all comes down to volume as all exhausts sound the same.

I have an Apexi N1 with an HKS DP and they sound great together, The HKS Hiper sounds really good also, and Wired For Speed had them for $490 shipped, just my two cents. Listen to as many as you can like he said above me, I love the angled canister look so I am biased towards the Apexi and the HKS....

Greddy EVO2 to keep the local law enforcement away, that is, if your local law enforcement likes to stop guys with loud exhausts.

How loud is the Hi-Power in comparison to, say...the Greddy Evo or Borla Hush? Is it as loud as the Blitz Nur whatever the heck its called?

Thanks!

It is my understanding that yes, cat-back lets you stay in DS because you're leaving in all the catalytic converters and such. Changing the width of those pipes is not going to give THAT much horsepower/performance so stock classes don't care about that. However, gut the up-pipe and all of a sudden, you have a very different beast.

The only things you can change and stay in D-Stock are:
- exhaust (cat-back or only muffler/tailpipe)
- shocks
- air filter (but not the intake - has to be a drop in stock filter)
- add a front sway bar
- any tires that fit stock size and offset rims.

Enjoy!!!

Thanks for all your posts! I'll definitely look into the ones you've mentioned.

The 5 Zigen was the other recommendation the guy at the hoopdie-parts shop had. He was pricing it at near $700. About right?

My only rush is the fact that my car is out of commission until I change the exhaust (unless I want to help ruin my turbo). I got rear ended and it destroyed the stock exhaust. Upside... insurance will pay for most of a new aftermarket one.

How much is the Greddy Evo2 running?

<edit for accuracy>

Couldn't agree more with you; exhausts are definitely a personal choice. I'm just so new to the aftermarket parts world that I don't even know what kind of exhausts are out there (that will fit my car), period!! So I needed some leads as to where to start looking.

I vote for Stromung or SPT. Either one will suit you just fine.

HKS has a sound clip on their web site of the Hi power on a sti bug eye. Speaking of sound has anyone heard any magnaflow exhaust. I can get a full cat back system custum made between 300-400 but i really like the HKS. Is it worth trying the magnaflow? Its a friend of mine so id be there to hear it and add remove resonators.

You could pick up the STI Genome muffler used for less than $600. I'd say try that, since everyone who's heard mine just loves it. My only issue is that the tip is too big for my taste.

That's just the muffler and tailpipe... no midpipe?

To be honest...a friend has this muffler and I think it sounds horrible. Very tinny.

The standard (not signature) Vishnu twin tip is a magnaflow. It is low and throaty not raspy. It is similar to the borla hush. I have no problem passing the 92 db sound limit at Laguna Seca.

Depends on what setup your friend had. I have a scoobysport up, down 3rd cat delete and stock midpipe. Sounds fantastic. I had a 3inch 5Zigen cat back portion before this, and it sounded ok, more Honda big can sound. Power was down from the stock mid and Genome combo. What I would go with, if your looking for cat back would be something like a stock midpipe and genome, or if you want something louder, than get a stromung for the midpipe. I had that setup for a while, but at WOT, my car was full on Group A loud!! I started getting a headache when I stepped on the gas. So I just threw on the factory midpipe and it made everything just right. No power difference that I can tell between the factory midpipe and stromung midpipe.

ROTFL

Well, after doing some reading, a new requirement has come to my attention. I'm driving a wagon. Thus, I need a resonator in my midpipe else my wagon is gonna be even louder than it already is on the inside. UGH. At least that might narrow down the search (and it eliminates the SPT...!). Sheesh.
