Default 08 STi - Head gasket getting replaced - While I'm In there ---

Anything else I should do while the whole thing is apart?

I've been reading and see it is recommended to get the head studs switched out, and was considering these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ar...1/applications

Aside from that, is this a 'golden' opportunity to get forged internals in there? If so, would I need to re-tune for them? Apparently the factory heads will need to be machined a bit so the dealership working on my car was asking if I wanted to do anything else while it is open?

Anyone?

Forget the ARP studs. You aren't pushing 30+psi, so you don't really need to worry about strong, expensive studs just yet. You can drop in some forged pistons while it's all torn apart. You wouldn't need a custom tune as long as the pistons are the same compression ratio.

I dont have any helpful info, but I do have a question- Did your car blow a head gasket? If so, how many miles were on the car and what were your symptoms?

I have 112000 on my 08 STi. Symptoms were overheating for me. Not sure what other symptoms are of this problem.

I'm planning on modding a bit later, also they said that with being modded, the head gasket went a bit sooner than average because of the extra boost I'm pushing (20PSi). That being said, I think it's a good idea to get the ARP head bolts because I do plan on upping my power moderately, and that can't be anything but good insurance 'while they're in there anyway'. I'm not anticipating going forged internals, and don't want to make such a big investment in that unless I have to and there wouldn't be any complications...

So you want expensive ass head studs as 'cheap insurance', but NOT forged internals??

Think about your priorities. What do you REALLY think is going to fail first when you start pushing the power? Stock head studs? Or the ishty stock pistons?

I said that before looking at prices... I am now leaning towards getting the forged pistons:

http://thmotorsports.com/i-259827.as...FQuxnQodKzEAhw

That being said, will this be all I need to add in there to give me the protection I am looking for, also will there be any engine work to be done to get these in there, or do they just drop in a stock block + sleeves? Do I absolutely have to do the rods as well, or is it 'great' to do just the pistons and call it a day? I'm not going to go over 400hp with my ultimate power goals.

You aren't modded, but you are?

Modding more a bit later. Stage 2ish right now, I'm just saying I am planning on adding some moderate mods, but I'm not going for ridiculous power numbers.

Any feedback on the pistons? Do I need the arms as well or is just getting the pistons the main thing I should be concerned about?

No need for forged rods. Pistons are your main concern.

Would love to do forged but just found out that it would require a retune, that's not going to happen...

Oh well, I'll change out to forged when I get more mods or something, my tuner is 4 hours away and I need the car for my DD.

I went through this exact issue last fall. Blown head gasket on the track. Rebuilt everything because I don't like having to do things twice. As RoadKillDMD mentioned already, you don't have to re-tune for the forge pistons if you keep the same CR.

You're obviously paying the dealer labor on this work. Get it all done now. Why pay them again down the road to do things that they can do now?

Get prices if the dealer is doing it. My wife's 08 outback just got a new hg under warantee. Timing belt will be reused if you don't buy a new one. Get a water pump while they're in there. That's $300 with labor from the dealer. If you get anything rebuilt, do not expect it's going to be cheap. With warantee covering most of what I need, I'm still forking over $500.

This happened to me at 15,000 miles. I put in CP pistons, EWG, EBCS, air injection delete, killer B oil pickup, and ARP head studs due to my mods planned in the future. 30K later and no issues.

I spoke with Rallysport and the guy I spoke with specifically said I would have to tune for the forged pistons due to them being like 9.2.1 and the stock ones being 8.6.1. Then you start looking around and there are no 8.6.1 forged internals that I could find where you could just drop them in place of the stock ones and you're good?

The guy was adamant about needing a tune, and is running forged on his Subaru...

Now I find these, is this 'drop and go' without a tune?

http://www.forgedperformance.com/sto...at=1657&page=1

Any other input? What's the real deal here?

There are several good brandname pistons that are stock compression ratio. Go with those. I think you still need to get the cylinders honed for them tho. No tune required

Feel free to close this thread, I started a new thread in 'built motor' which is more specific to the forged components that this thread has devolved into.

Thanks for the input, and if you want to contribute in the new thread:
