Transmission Whine
A buddy of mine was telling me he heard people complaining about transmission whine on the Tribecas and asked if mine whined. I rarely drive it, so I made sure to pay attention the next time I drove. I'm not exactly sure what transmission whine sounds like, but I'm pretty sure mine's doing it. It's most noticeable when accelerating from a stand still.
Have you guys noticed this and does anybody have info related to why it whines and what Subaru says about it? -Tom |

I think that's called egine whining, i.e. the engine is crying out loud: I don't have enough POWER!
Other than that, never heard about transimission whining issue before. I bet Subaru heard a lot owner's whining about lack of power though. |

The tribeca seriously lacks punch in the low RPM range...
Especially when passing in city driving, it almost feels it wants to stall, when the gas is floored to reach to passing speed...
Another place it creates serious problems is ascending hills in cruise control. The car jerks frequently as the cruise control revs up the engine high and then drops it and then revs it high again and drops it - keeps doing that all through the ascend. I have learnt to flip it in "Sport" mode in both of the above scenerios to overcome the low end torque problem... |

The normal 'D' postion is designed to save gas. As a result, it tends to hold on to higher gear longer whenever possible. The 'Sport' mode will help this a lot.

Also... don't floor it. tip in to the gas... you'll notice better acceleration

I had a whine that was engine speed related. I was afraid it was the transmission, particularly because revving the engine in neutral produced no noise.
Had dealer check it @ 7500 service and they said they replaced a pulley on the motor. I think the new one has a fraction of the noise left. Interesting, I have had 2 warranty repairs (both times getting an oil change) and didn't receive an invoice for the warranty work. I get them for my other cars. Any experiences? |

That is odd. I have always gotten a printout of the work done and 0.00 for the cost. Its always good to have a record of work done.
