Default Switch to Syntheic, when and how??? 06 WRX

Hi everyone! super stoked about the 06 WRX i'll be picking up in the days coming up. I need advice from all of you.

I'm want to switch to an all synthetic motor oil with a good filter after my second oil change. I'll probably move to MObil 1 since i hear it's a good choice. My question is: Which oil filter is good? I read some stuff on Fram, is that the way to go or should i be going back to the Subie dealership for an OEM filter?

Also, if i get the a good filter and synthetic oil, after how many KM/Miles should i be changing the oil? I don't gear down to use the engine break.

Thanks in advance!

I switched at my first oil change. About 3k miles. I've no problems the car runs great and dosen't burn a drop of oil. Mobil 1 and Purolator Pure One filters all the way.

If you use Mobil 1, use 10-30 for sure. I recommmend against Mobil 1, however, because many suby people experience oil burn-off with it, myself included. It is a good oil though.

Try Castrol 'made in Germany' 0-30, it is very good stuff.

And PureOnes restrict flow. The OEM filters are very high-flow, and tests have shown that high flow/lesser filtration trumps high filtration/restricted flow. If you car is going into bypass mode, then what good is the ass kicking filtration media? Anyway the OEM filters filter excellently.

Stay away from FRAM. Period.

I switched over to synthetic after 10K. I started off using Mobil 1, but my car ate the oil the like water, I don't know why.

Since then, I've switched to Castrol high performance something or another. This stuff is awesome, I haven't lost a drop of it, and I'm coming up on my next oil change in a few hundred miles.

I would not switch to full synthetic before 8k. Also do not use any other filters besides OEM factory Subaru. They are worth the extra money.

And what is your reasoning behind that(8k before switching)? Not trying to be rude, I just have never heard that figure before...

I did one oil change with Dino @ 1k miles and then switched to synthetic at 4k. Considering that many cars come stock with synthetics these days, there shouldnt be any issues with switching too soon. The only things that I have read is that in some cases a car may be too old to switch to synthetics as they can seep due to the fact that they are much thinner.

Always use OEM filters, just buy a case of them

From what I've seen on bobistheoilguy, STi engines have been seen to still be breaking in at 10k

Depends how they're measuring that. We've had people crack open blocks on the board that had over 100,000 miles and still had machine marks that hadn't worn away yet.

Used dino oil until 15k, then switched to synthetic. To make it easier to know when to change the oil, I do it every 5k miles. It's just easier for me to remember to change oil at 20k, 25k, 30k, so forth so forth.

Been using the Puralator filter since the first change, it's worked great so far.

WRXWagonFun, it depends on your driving habits. You should do an oil analysis at 4k to find out. www.blackstonelabs.com Most likely you're fine going at least 5k.

ALaDDiN, 5/30 shears down a lot more than 10/30 of the same oil. I'd use 10/30, unless you live in the Antarctic.

Charge, they're measuring it by oil analysis: wear metal are still high around 10k on some, IIRC, but calm down after that.

timmah, purolator makes, in general, excellent filters. They have proven to have an excellent design and material quality, 2nd best flow rate (behind K&N), and one of the best filtration rates (and the overall best combination of flow and filtration without compromising either). Oil analysis doesn't lie, and Purolators bring in consistantly stellar UOA's. Keep in mind the Pureones aren't as good necessarily.

The wear metals in my FXT were just starting to go down to normal at 22.5k. These wear metals will shear most 30 weight oils down to a 20 weight rather quickly. If you're running a synthetic 30 weight before 10k miles on the odo, I'm willing to bet that it's a 20 weight in less than 3k miles (depending on your location and driving habits).

switch to synthetic if you feel like prolonging your oil change intervals, otherwise it's just pointless. synthetic oil is over-hyped with car enthusiasts, regular oil technology has come a long way. at worst i'd switch the oil filter twice every oil change interval.

ALL oil technology has come a long way. Dinos are great, but synthetics are still better and protect far more, regardless of interval. If you get a new car every 5 years, use whatever you like. If you want to keep it as long as possible, use synthetic.

Switching oil filters is a waste of money, unless you are going more than 7000+ miles or operating in dusty rally conditions (in which case you need to do more than change only your filter.

With the advances in filter technology, a 3k interval doesn't come close to maxing a filters capacity. People on BITOG have cut filters apart after 10,000+ miles and shown that they could easily go farther, both with piccs and used oil analysis.

Stick to what your manual recommends in terms of how/when to change the oil. I hightly recommend reading Unabomber's sticky/faq on oil, there is a lot of good info there. In fact any sticky by Unabomber has a wealth of good information and is worth reading.

everyone varies...I switched to Redine 5w30 at 3750. 48K+ miles to date and motor feels good, no issues. No analysis yet, oil change intervals are 4K - 5500 with stock filter

The Mobile 1 works great. I would also consider changing the tranny and rear fluid to Redline Synthetic, it will prolong the life of those components as well. Check out COBB for amounts. Also, stay away from FRAM, they dont flow as nice. The OEM filters are actually Purolator Pure 1 filters, with a different label, so those work great.

After the seepage problems, they have scrapped the 09a filter, that was manufactured by Purolator, and are back to the black Roki 15208AA100.

Default synthetic oil

Ive had two subaru outbacks. One had 7500mi other had about 14000. Did both with Mobil1. One with lessor milage took longer to break in .Other with more milage ran much smoother. These engines need time to break in.Although it woun't hurt any thing ,It seems it's better to wait ,engines built tight from factory.Great motors ,will serve you well, be patient it, worth it.2001 ltd sedan,2003 wagon,2006 tribeca ltd.All great cars!
