So winter setups aren't discussed here much but this seems like the appropriate thread. I've been thinking about picking up some steelies and someone pointed out to me that they need to be 16"s to clear WRX brakes. Before I was looking at 14"s since tires are so damn cheap with that diameter, and the thought just occurred to me, I was thinking about getting spacers for the stockers anyway. So now I'm wondering if it would be practical, and I can't think why not. There's lots of 14"s on CL for $100 or less, along with the tire savings would probably pay for the spacers. Anyone have an idea what the offset of most 14" steelies are or what size spacers would be necessary?
Mostly talking out loud here. |

Basically......unless buying very specific 15" wheels, you need 16's. |

Yeah, Braids are my dream but I'm poor. I appreciate the clarification though.
Not entirely off topic, I might just stick with stock for the sole reason of the TPMS, I CANNOT live with the light and new ones are expensive. |

Curious if I would have issues running 17x9 +35 on a '11 WRX lowered on H&R springs... Tire is a 235/45/17
Thanks in advance if someone knows. Most likely rubbing on bumps or peeps in the back. Would I just need rear rolled, or would running camber be recommended? |

Only disadvantage is steering feel with wider more offset tires is less. Weight can effect response. What is the weight of those? |

yeah, the 255/40-18 will be too tall. Try the 255/35-18 size. This size will be a little shorter than the 265/35-18 but will give you better steering feel and will allow you to accelerate out of the corner slightly faster. They will probably also be a little lighter than the 265 (same tire model).
Another route is to go with 17" wheels. 17x9" and 255/40-17 tires. Or go to even lighter stock sized wheels at 17x8" and 235/45-17 tires that are really really sticky! This will give you the best steering feel too. Last edited by texascanuck; 09-27-2012 at 11:25 AM. |

How does the +38 offset compare to the +40 offset
I'm looking at 18x9.5 5x100, enkei rpf1 id like the +40 offset but they only look to come in +38 What tires with that offset? Last edited by redwrx11; 10-01-2012 at 11:59 AM. |

Read through the thread man....extremely common setup and if you lower you are going to most likely roll with either tire. Rolling fenders is not a big deal.... |

Alright guys I'm looking at going wider now. I've been using my stock wheels with star specs on them for autocross and I've gotten to the point that bigger tires and bigger brakes are where I'm going to be making time. So I'm looking at going all out here. I was a nice 17x9.5 wheel 5x100 that's not going to be dumb expensive. Enkei rpf1 seems like a good choice to me. But I'm more concerned about offset. I want to run a 275/35. Has a slightly shorter diameter so acceleration should improve out of the corners too. Also anyone here have any experience with the Hoosier a6 tire? Star specs are great but I'm looking for something more aggressive.

We have not yet tried 285/35R18, for a couple of reasons. One is that the tire is 2.1% larger than the stock 2011+ WRX tire, slightly over our 2% rule of thumb in terms of variance from stock.
Dan- How did you compute for the 2.1% variance comparing 285/35R18 vs 235/45R17 (stock)? Curious as to how I could use this as a benchmark. Thanks! |
