Will there be any fender rubbing issues do you guys think? Roll needed?
Don't quote me on this but I'm going to say you will need a roll in the rear. I ran 17x9 +37 with a 235 tire and cleared by a few mm. I was lowered on tanabe df210 springs. Now that I got a roll front and rear I have 17x9 +17 with the 235 tire and don't rub. So the roll will allow for a lot more clearance.

So winter setups aren't discussed here much but this seems like the appropriate thread. I've been thinking about picking up some steelies and someone pointed out to me that they need to be 16"s to clear WRX brakes. Before I was looking at 14"s since tires are so damn cheap with that diameter, and the thought just occurred to me, I was thinking about getting spacers for the stockers anyway. So now I'm wondering if it would be practical, and I can't think why not. There's lots of 14"s on CL for $100 or less, along with the tire savings would probably pay for the spacers. Anyone have an idea what the offset of most 14" steelies are or what size spacers would be necessary?
Mostly talking out loud here.

So a +35 on a 17x9 will poke out a bit huh? Not so sure thats what I'm looking for. I mean a flush with the fender look is ok but I don't want my wheels popping out past the fenders. hmmmm. Yes I am a super nooooob with wheel fitment. Thanks for the info Jordan.

Spacers will not help, radial clearance will be the issue you run into with 14" wheels.

If you want flush on the WRX shoot for 42- 40 offset

Couldn't vouch for poke or no poke. With my 235 tires I thought the 37 offset looked great. It didn't poke. With the bigger 255 you would probably see some of the tread poking a bit. Depends on your alignment too. I had a pretty aggressive alignment (-2.5 degrees of camber rear and 2.25 up front). You can always be safe with the higher offset. I bought 42 originally but then wishing I bought the lower offset and ended up using 5mm spacers to get a little lower offset. It's all a learning curve man. And once you figure out the look you want you will be able to do the math on back spacing and offset to always find a wheel that fits to your liking.

You would need to get a spacer big enough so the entire wheel would be past the callipers

14"s wont fit. only specifically designed 15" rally wheels (Braid, Enkei RCG4, Team Dynamics are the only ones that come to mind) due to the absence of a dropped center on the wheel.

Basically......unless buying very specific 15" wheels, you need 16's.

Yeah, Braids are my dream but I'm poor. I appreciate the clarification though.
Not entirely off topic, I might just stick with stock for the sole reason of the TPMS, I CANNOT live with the light and new ones are expensive.

Braids are actually very cheap. I got my set of 15x7 Winrace Safari's for $900 shipped directly from Spain.

Wheels: Te37sl Black 18x9.5 +40
Tires: 255/40/18 RE11
Suspension: KWv3

How does this sound as a street car for the track?
any disadvantages with going with these specs?

Lol I know, hopefully next year. I'm trying to spend less than that including tires. Plus for winter I think I'd want the N Lars which would be over $1000 plus shipping.

Curious if I would have issues running 17x9 +35 on a '11 WRX lowered on H&R springs... Tire is a 235/45/17

Thanks in advance if someone knows. Most likely rubbing on bumps or peeps in the back. Would I just need rear rolled, or would running camber be recommended?

I know someone running that exact setup on a 11sti wheels wise. Roll the rears otherwise you will rub on certain occasions. Hmm I think his tires are 265/35/R18 though which you would want to run a 35 to stay near stock diameter

Only disadvantage is steering feel with wider more offset tires is less. Weight can effect response. What is the weight of those?

yeah, the 255/40-18 will be too tall. Try the 255/35-18 size. This size will be a little shorter than the 265/35-18 but will give you better steering feel and will allow you to accelerate out of the corner slightly faster. They will probably also be a little lighter than the 265 (same tire model).

Another route is to go with 17" wheels. 17x9" and 255/40-17 tires.

Or go to even lighter stock sized wheels at 17x8" and 235/45-17 tires that are really really sticky! This will give you the best steering feel too.

How does the +38 offset compare to the +40 offset

I'm looking at 18x9.5 5x100, enkei rpf1 id like the +40 offset but they only look to come in +38

What tires with that offset?

I'm looking at doing the same thing. Will I need to roll fenders? Would a 255/35 allow me to not have to roll my fenders?

Currently on stock suspension but considering coilovers in the future.

Read through the thread man....extremely common setup and if you lower you are going to most likely roll with either tire.

Rolling fenders is not a big deal....

Alright guys I'm looking at going wider now. I've been using my stock wheels with star specs on them for autocross and I've gotten to the point that bigger tires and bigger brakes are where I'm going to be making time. So I'm looking at going all out here. I was a nice 17x9.5 wheel 5x100 that's not going to be dumb expensive. Enkei rpf1 seems like a good choice to me. But I'm more concerned about offset. I want to run a 275/35. Has a slightly shorter diameter so acceleration should improve out of the corners too. Also anyone here have any experience with the Hoosier a6 tire? Star specs are great but I'm looking for something more aggressive.

We have not yet tried 285/35R18, for a couple of reasons. One is that the tire is 2.1% larger than the stock 2011+ WRX tire, slightly over our 2% rule of thumb in terms of variance from stock.

Dan-
How did you compute for the 2.1% variance comparing 285/35R18 vs 235/45R17 (stock)? Curious as to how I could use this as a benchmark. Thanks!

Especially on a wrx wouldn't you if anything want to go with a smaller overall diameter to help compensate for the gearing?
