Default grimmspeed 38mm ewg uppipe review

hello everyone today im reviewing the grimmspeed 38mm ewg uppipe.
the uppipe is coated from grimmspeed and the coating appears to be very good.
we will see though how well it holds up to the heat overtime.i gotta say i love
the thick flanges on this pipe.construction is top notch as are the welds and the inside of the pipe
is nice and smooth.definetly what youd expect from grimmspeed.
id also like to comment how its very nice to be able to buy a readily available up pipe that has the
flange for a ewg rather then having to mod a stock or aftermarket up pipe i think its just great

im also going to enjoy this ewg set up alot because on the outside my car looks completely stock
with my beat up wheels and everything haha im going to enjoy this
i had the stock sti pipe in before so hopefully with the new uppipe and the tial external wastegate ill see some
nice gains!

install done one 2/28/13
the install of the uppipe was very easy i went from the top though as i had my turbo out anyways for my inspection.
overall it will be easier to install this vs stock as it doesnt have gobs of heat shield around it,so it should slide in nice and easy.
i gotta go back to the topic of the flanges again they are nice and thick wich i think helps alot with gasket sealing makes everything tight i love it.

also the position of the ewg flange is great,im pretty convinced this uppipe will fit with any down pipe, currently i have a cnt downpipe, and that cat is right after the bell mouth and that fith with the ewg and dump tube its just freaking great, grimmspeed has a good thing going with these uppipes and there support of the subaru community i hope they continue to support us and continue to release new and exciting products.

i just want to thank everyone at grimmspeed for giving me my perfect solution
you guys are great.

some say for smaller turbo's. so the 44mm is for bigger turbo's but dont quote me on that. (search nasioc)

OP: hope you enjoy it and nice review.

Yeah it's going to depend on the size of the turbo and how much boost you're looking to make

Here is a great article on sizing WG's

i was dissapointed in grimm speed. i wanted a coated 44mm uppipe and they were at the coaters for way too long. so i had to settle with a uncoated uppipe. still a great product just a lil upset its not the coated version.

but everything else is good for grimmspeed.

also i perfer the 44mm for a smaller turbo on big boost.

rally guys use 2 wastegates on small turbos all the time. you can get the fast spool of a lil turbo when the ewg is closed. but as soon as it opens your turbo breaths alot better on exhaust side.

its the key to a hybrid turbo. if you have a super small exhaust side and a big compressor a big wastegate is ideal. it helps get rid of the pressure in the exhaust side. which is the lil turboz down fall.

I should note that we do all of our coating in house. Did you order your part through us or a vendor of ours? If it was from a vendor chances are they just didn't have the part in stock or on order.

after the install my well known subaru mechanic noticed a leak near the turbo. he thinks its the upipipe. i said it couldnt be with it being a more expensive grimmspeed brand.

sure enough i have the same problem as this guy.....

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2205000

so i am asking grimmspeed for a full refund and i want a turboxs up pipe

Pipe that you have linked to in your post is a much older GS product and it was an isolated incident. In the past couple of years our entire exhaust line has seen a decent amount of upgrades and changes in manufacturing methods. I can assure you that every pipe that has left our shop in the last 2 years has been flat sanded to true the fnage up since all welding does produce some flange warping. We do this flat sanding post welding so that you the customer has a flat sealing surface and the lowest chance of the flange causing a leak.

With that being said, even a flat flange can leak. Not necesarrily due to the flange, but the order in which all the interacting parts and peices are fitted together and bolted up. There is a right and a wrong sequence in tightening things down. In the end, if you are having any issues with our products give us a call, we will make sure things get sorted out. 612.379.0000

Did anyone have any issues with the gasket on the turbo side not sitting properly?

Mine had a gap. I had to grind one of the holes for the gasket bigger to seat it properly. A drill would have made my life easier but I didn't have one with me. I used an oem gasket.

If you have the 38mm Tial MV-S and with the Grimmspeed up pipe, the install is tricky. At first, it seems like the vband for the up pipe connection is too narrow.
In order for the vband to fit the flanges you have to press it together really hard. This is because the recess on the up pipe flange isn't deep enough to accommodate the valve seat under pressure. This isn't a Tial issue.

I actually installed mine with the spring out and had a F*** of a time getting it compressed while attached to the up pipe. DO NOT attempt this!

Also, gs told me to remove the valve seat but I couldn't figure out how to and my tuner advised against it.

GS, love your product it's great but maybe consider deepening that seat a little thanks.

I've been running grimmspeed's ewg setup on my cars since 2008. The older versions which had lower quality flex sections developed leaks but grimmspeed warrantied it for me with no problems. I've never had a problem with leaks at either mating surface after installing their setups. As long as you tighten in the proper order you should be fine. To the other guy complaining about the wastegate flanges not being deep enough, you just have to use a channel lock to compress the clamp together...it's not really an issue. Thank you grimmspeed for your support and awesome products!

If you think your pipe has failed, get in touch with our customer service staff and they'll help you get it sorted out! It's sounds like you've done that, so expect a reply later today or tomorrow. We've always stood behind our products and we'll continue to do so. A few years back, we made some changes to the design of the pipes and the flex sections. Since making those changes, we haven't seen a single one of those pipes or flex sections fail in any way. It's possible that you had an earlier pipe and a few of those did have issues depending on the fitment and installation.

Let me know if there's anything else we can do for you!

what wastegate are you running? i had a hell of a time clamping my tial mvs to the flange. its like the flange on the upipe was too thick almost because the tial flange would go in the v band clamp with the wastgate very easily.
