Default Five-cylinder turbo planned for new Audi TT-RS and RS3

Five-cylinder turbo planned for new Audi TT-RS and RS3
Posted on Tuesday 19 August 2008

Audi took the wraps off its new TT-S range back at January’s Detroit Auto Show and then followed it up with the new TT 2.0L TDI diesel and entry-level 1.8L TFSI, however there’s one more variant in the works and it could potentially be the fastest production TT ever. The new car is the performance RS variant of the TT and it’s expected to be launched in both coupe and roadster forms in the middle of next year.

The car was originally thought to be launched at the end of the year but its release date has since been pushed back because of the extra time required to further develop and test its all-new . Audi is also looking to use the same engine in a new RS variant of the A3 hatch as well. This model is expected to arrive soon after the launch of the TT-RS.
Powering both cars will be a five-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine developing between 350hp (260kW) and 390hp (291kW). The older VR6 unit was ruled out early on because of its incompatibility with Audi’s latest turbocharger , according to our friends at Sweden’s Auto Motor & Sport.
The new engine will feature an inline-five design and is said to be only 6cm wider than the current four-cylinder 2.0L TFSI mill. This is because of the relatively small cylinder size of the new engine, which will reportedly total just 2.5L in displacement.

While the RS3 remains hidden, the upcoming TT-RS has been spotted in prototype form testing at Germany’s Nurburgring. Although engineers were using a TT-S shell, key features such as the oversized cross-drilled brake discs, upgraded calipers, electronically controlled rear-spoiler and carbon-fiber elements suggest the test car is an even sportier model.

Looks great but it will cost way too much. Isn't the new TT S between 66k-70k?

Awesome. They're going back to a 5 cylinder turbo engine! Twin turbo in this case!

Yep. Basically GT-R money (ignoring the GT-R's markup). Or Cayman S. Or M3. Or Z-06.

VAG is optimistic to a fault.

Sweet. Finally a TT that a man could drive without embarrassment - insert devil banana here. Agreed likely pricey though.

nice but if it's M3 money, i'll take the M3. If we're talking 45k, it might be worth taking another look.

I was never a TT fan until the recent redesign. it finally has a bold muscular look that reflects it sports car image. But I do think a TT-RS priced anywhere near M range is ridiculous. Car companies need to start giving us performance coupes in the $40K-$50K range.

Yes, GT-R money but not Cayman S ($59,100.00) or M3 ($56,500.00) or Z-06 ($72,125.00 although currently receiving discounts up to 14k at some dealers) money. The TTS, which appears to be less car then this TTRS, is slated to cost $66-70k. The current price of a base 911 is $75,600.00.

So where does this TTRS fit in? The price will have to be north of the TTS price meaning that it could be anywhere from $68-75k; which would put it in 911 territory. Then you have the RS4 MSRP of $66,910.00. I am interested to see where it ends up.

The 2.5 5-cylinder was originally made to be boosted. But they didn't want it to step on the 2.0lT. Looks like they've turned on that reasoning.

I think that this spells the end of the VR6.

Agreed even with the new power the car is still relatively ghey, but not nearly as ghey as a boxster - and when you think about non-ghey vehicles that are also convertibles and AWD... there aren't many... 911 Turbo, Gallardo Spyder come to mind - at double and triple the price.

i've been a huge fan of the new TT looks/design ever since i saw the first leaked proto photo..now that an RS version is in the works that's even better..unfortunately..that price has to drop because i'd rather pay out that money for the RS4 first

If the TT-S is already 66ish thats ****ing stupid. There is no way the TT-RS is going to be "68-75" try more like 80ish then...which is sad, cus RS cars are awesome, but it still wont touch the GT-R....for that money I'll get godzilla

WTF do you people get your prices from? The TT-S would be $45-47k in the US, NOT $66-70k.

I'm confused as to why you'd want awd and convertible. To each his own, but it sounds like overkill to me.

Well if Audi's aren't AWD, then they are FWD. If its FWD, then it would mean it cannot fight with BMW, Benz and lower end Porsches', and even Infiniti G37 in the true sense, especially for the price point which this car will try to command.

Too true. I would be willing to spend that kind of cash on something that I REALLY like--but everything out there has a drawback. In the case of the TT, even if it was in that range, in typical VAG fashion, it will start to fall apart at around 50K miles... .
