Autronic SM4
I've decided to move to this unit for my new setup. It's very full featured and supposedly the autotune works great with an LM-1 and their autronic cable. I contacted autronic in Oz and they stated that this ecu supports both the new and old style trigger patterns so it should work perfectly. Here's some more info for anyone who's interested:
http://www.autronic.com/page_files/sm4_kit.htm Check out this video too, with Ben Strader from EFI101.com http://www.autronic.com/bin/Autronic_1cell.mov Really helps to illustrate how powerful this thing is. Retail is around $2200-2800. For anyone looking for a cheaper standalone my old link plus with serial link and wire-in harness is for sale for $700 shipped. Adam

Yes i i am going to buy an SM4 if the eManage does not work out. i will be getting mine at the end of the month.

i will also be using this unit, unless the SM5 comes out before i order it, since i need to control two variable cam functions and this one only controls one.
Drac, can you elaborate what you mean by using "their cable" for the autotune? I was under the impression, and they told me i needed their controller for it to work correctly, i have since figured out that it just uses a 0-1v linear signal but it is reverse of a normal output i believe. i have a tech edge which i would assume is like the LM-1 if i can just use this cable to reverse the voltages then it should work. The cable from lm-1 does not do any reversing- it's got two grounds- one that grounds to the sensor ground and one to the chassis- which is i guess is what makes it special- it also has a voltage divider built in to help eliminate some of the noise from other components in the car. You configure the output via the LM1 software for whatever voltage range you would like. Lots of people have had a lot of success with this unit. The SM4 is the only one that supports the lm-1 input though, the older smc and sm2 require the $2000 autronic wideband controller. Considering the sm4 is still not 100% complete I wouldn't hold your breath for an sm5. I've heard talk they may implement ion sensing later in the sm4.

yea i can reconfigure the tech edge to output a 0-1v with a negative slope as well, i have been too lazy to set it up and try the autotune with it though since i am selling this current setup, i'll wait till the SM4 to try it.
good info, it will take other UEGO sensors right? its not specific to the lm-1 or at least i dont see why it would be. Ben |

I have an sm4 on my ver3 sti/ej257 setup.
I'm very impressed with it so far. The sm4 uses a 0-5volts for its wideband input so be carefull as i think the lm-1 cable is setup with a voltage divider for the 0-1volt smc,sm2 ecu's? I'm using a techedge 2e0 with the WBlin- jumper pulled out and find the reading very good. Drac9 is right that the sm4 is not 100% finished as they are still working on a few things like adding more trigger options for differant engines. but it is all good for the subaru's. If the sensor ground gets conected to body ground it can make the tps play up a bit and lose its settings. |

guys guys guys you can easily re-configure the SM-4 to take _any_ kind of input for the wideband auto tune, just set the span and offset and fire away.
Using an LM-1 with the 2 resistor voltage divider on the 5v line, you can have a 0-1v signal which you can easily configure the SM4 to read, and for the plug and play SM4 boards (hand made), it will read right off of the rear o2 line. I have done a bunch of SM4s for ver 7s, 8s, etc. And I am not sure what you guys are talking about it being 'not finished' as we have been using them in our rally cars for... ages ? If you want a v7/v8 (ooohhh ahh and it just happens to also be pin compatible with a stock WRX) Sm4 plug and play let me know. -Pat www.rocketrally.com |

O.K then the software is not 100% finished. Still using beta17 witch does not have all the trigger setups yet. If you want the early subaru trigger setup then you need to put 129 in like this. This information is not in the manual.
Its better to use a 0-5v as you will get finer reslution. I do have my offset at 1009 to make my techedge read just rght. |

not tyring to nitpick, but you get the _SAME_ resoloution if you use a 0-5v LM-1 output but with a voltage divider, that you would get if you use 0-5vthe advantage is that you can use the stock 02 rear wire and one less wire to mess with

you do need the 0-1v for the autotune function though if you want that to work, unless they changed the required input. yea i have been told the manual is not too complete? however i have yet to look at it myself. I will be needing to do a custom trigger setup anyways so if it is still custom configurable then i dont mind

what I am trying to say is that you can autotune with **any** voltage range and **any** signal as long as its linear, you just set the span and the offset... using a 5v signal with a voltage divider on the 0-1v rear o2 line, you get: full resoloution, with one less wire.

patr,
When loging from the sm4 to the laptop have you found that it wont go over 20 samples/sec even if you set it higher? Rayhall thinks it could be the serial cable limiting it but whey would Autronic give you the option for 100 samples/sec then? |

if you have speed issues log to ecu and then download...

so the new autotune with a 0-5v input on the sm4, that is pretty handy
I am gonna need to download that new software and check it out, peope have claimed it to be confusing but i would like to check it out. patr or rac, what do you know about the AVLS operation on the ez30R and can a control map be created using one of the general outputs on teh sm4? it looks like it is a small voltage range but i am not sure if it uses pwm, or if its on/off. The output setup can get a little confusing for the first few times but when you work it out its neally endless what you could control.
I have not played with any sort of cam control so i'm unsure about the ez30r I do all my tuning on the road and find data logging and using the math key the best. I found the autotune good to get the new map up and runing for the first time but is not suited to road tuning unless you are very hard on the brakes to keep it in a zone till tuned. The software is a breeze to use. |
