Oil change question...
Ok, I tried to do a search and couldn't find what I wanted. Earlier, someone posted what kinds of oil to use on a new car on each oil change. It was something like: 3000-regular oil, 6000 and 9000-blend of reg. and synthetic, and 12000 and on-synthetic. I know this isn't right, so if you know, could you please post the correct way to get the car ready for synthetic??? Thanks a lot!

I didn't think you were supposed to ever mix synthetic and regular oil... I could be wrong though. I'm going to do my first 3 changes with regular then switch over to synthetic.

I think using regular oil when the car is new is just a bad rumor. There are plenty expensive new cars out there that are shipped with synthetic oil. I've switched between regular and synthetic in my last car (93' Integra), mostly using regular and sold it after 170K miles. That engine was in great condition when I sold it and I never noticed a difference in performance. The only I did notice was I could go about 4-5K miles before changing when using synthetic since it wouldn't break down as soon. BTW, consumer's reports did a story on motor oils about a year ago (maybe 1.5 yrs) where they used many different motor oils (mobil, pennzoil, etc) in NYC cabs and then torn down the engines to check for wear after a several thousand miles (I don't remember how many miles but it was a lot). They didn't find any significant difference in wear in any of the engines. It was a fairly comprehensive and practical test, much more so than some of their other subjective tests. Their advice was to buy the viscosity recommended by the car manufacturer and as for synthetics, to only buy them if you don't change your oil when the manufacturer recommends.

I'm thinking he means synthetic blends 8Complex, I know those exist. I had 'em in my old car.

Yeah, there are pre-blended oils that you can buy at the store; nothing special...

So if I change my oil every 3000 miles, like I do, regular oil would be the SAME as synthetic as far as protecting my engine goes???

From what I've heard on this topic in the past, I wouldn't put synth oil in for a little while. As far as cars that come with synthetics, about 90% have forced induction of some kind (usually turbo). Conventional oil is conventional oil, but it should be fine.
