once you start modifying a vehicle you are on your own, it's up to you to know the part #s and keep track of them...

example...my '74 CJ5...232 I6, has a 1980 ford 6 cyl electronic distributor with extended cap, a '94 escort E-type coil, and an HEI module from a '76 chevy pickup 6 cyl....i have all the NAPA part #s in my file...as well as a printout of the wiring diagram from the guy on off-road.com forums who went to the trouble of figuring out which parts to use

The only time it really sucks to use that system is when you've replaced a major component with a re manufactured component.

In my legacy we had to put in a rebuilt 4EAT. This broke the match between my VIN and the part number for the new transmission (it was a slightly different version I guess).

No big deal at first, but about 5 years later the internal speed sensor went on the transmission.

Took it in to the dealer, they pull the pan, order the part based on my VIN, boom, not the right part. Took them 5 tries to get the right harness! The mechanic took one look at the trans and knew which part it was, but they wouldn't even listen to him.

So frustrating!

"We don't have that part in stock, would you like to order it?" Prepay of course.

3) It creates a data base uniquely identifying: You, your car, the part. Whether or not we are being "tracked" is only a question of semantics. No, Subaru isn't doing this because they want to get in our business. BUT, IT IS A SEARCHABLE DATABASE!

The implications aren't hard to imagine. Say vehicle X is used in a homicide. It's unregistered, but the local dealerships cough up their records. Someone transposes a "1" for an "I" and suddenly you're being investigated for murder!

What on this green earth are you smoking? You do realize that they don't use Os (or any other like number/letter combo) in vins to stifle confusion. Plus, any retard with a pen and paper can write down your vin while you are in safeway buying bananas or whatever it is you eat. What is he going to do with it? Go commit murder and then say he was driving a car with your VIN number? lols, go cook up some more conspiracies...

The reality of it is that dealers don't give two ****s about anything you do to your car and would rather sell you parts/service rather than not sell you parts/service, they don't keep your VIN (unless you bought the car there), they don't make records of what they looked up for you, they don't do any of that crap. I should know since I have to call our parts dept. all of the time to get parts for customers cars that I sell them.

Or everyone could just go to their trustworthy dealer like Annapolis Subaru in MD and not have to worry about anything...they will even do a bit of performance work for you. =)

My local "trustworthy dealer" charges 30% over list price for parts and they still need a VIN. That was annoying when I needed an STi part for my FXT..considering I don't have an STi VIN...

Here's my fun story,

I needed a boost controller for my car. I have a 2004 WRX with a hybrid motor in it, I've been protuned, but my tuner is in Chicago (P&L ftw) and I'm in Cincy.
I can't get an aftermarket controller w/o a new tune and a lot of hassle.

I call up the local dealership and get some moron in the parts department that doen't even know what a boost controller is, they think transmission part. The moron asks for my VIN number, I reply this part is not VIN dependent, give them the Make, Model and MY, they tell my yes it is dependent and they must have a VIN to look up the part. OK whatever I tell them to hang on a minute that I have to go outside to copy down the VIN, they then put me on hold for 10 minutes, it takes me about 2 mins to get the VIN, finally I hang up and call back. I get right through, same moron though. Then I give them the VIN which they enter improperly they hear GD in the VIN and enter GT, I even said "D as in Dan" when I read the damn VIN! I also told them it was a 2004 WRX known to most of us as a GD Impreza. Then I have to argue with the parts moron that my car does in fact have a boost controller and just because you can't find it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Another 10 minutes
go by of moron searching for said part.

Eureka!! they find the part that is out of stock and 70% over list. $99.98 Subarugenuineparts.com $169.99 at dealership.

25 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Worst of all in the many crappy jobs I had in college I worked at an Advance Auto parts store. I used to look up parts all day long. Our system was MY/Make/Model and if there was a mid year change it would prompt us to ask for a VIN, it would still give us all of the options without the VIN. This way we didn't have to waste everybody's time with the damn VIN number, and if by god there was a mid year change we could still get the right part for the customer.

Ridiculous...

I have read through the first three pages of this thread and it completely blows my mind how many of you guys are so paranoid. The dealership asks for a VIN simply because different manufacturing dates can use slightly different parts. Its their simple way of ensuring that you are using the right parts for your vehicle. For example, my 06 WRX TR was manufactured in Jan of 2005 in preparation for the MY release. In August of 2005 Subaru started using different bumper clips for the fender connection. While both of them will work, one is actually designed for mine and the other isn't.

Being that I work and run a Subaru parts department there are many changes that are made during model years. The VIN supplies us with all info needed to ensure we get the right part the first time.

But then it makes life difficult when you know what model / year a part came from, but you don't have the VIN from the car the part got scavenged from.

From what I can tell it only fits Impreza from 08-09.

I agree with you. I know here at my dealership we will not turn you away if you do not have the vin. We will try to do everything we can to get you the part you need without it. We just came out with a new way to help consumers get there parts with our website:

I agree that asking for the vin is BS. I called my local Subie Dealer to ask'm about a f/bumper cover. I have a 98 L but ofcourse i was lookin for the Ver6. So i told them that my vin# wont bring up the part i was looking for because i want a part from a diff model and i swear i could somehow see through the telephone a lightbulb going off above this persons head like he jus had an epiphany or some crap an realized that asking that Q is stupid! hahaha ...Atleast thats how i seemed in my head as it happened

I work at a dealership, be it commercial, and we can't even access our partspro system without a VIN... at all! You have to have a VIN plugged in just to enter the site so I'd have to memorize 1 VIN for every different setup tractor on the road to not hassle the customer for his VIN. We in no way store or record them for warranty situations either.

I wanted to post a quick response to this too. The parts counter guy should be well equip'd to deal with this. We have a tech line and a modification line that we can call with these situations and they'll get you everything you need to complete, if possible, the modification.

I'm such a pain in the ass. When the parts guy asked for my VIN I told him it was a track car with no VIN and I knew what the gaskets that I needed looked like. He searched around for 5 or so minutes on the computer until he got fed up so he just moved the monitor and keyboard to myside of the counter and let me find them.

Next time Ill just bring my VIN in, its really no big deal, but I didn't know I needed a VIN before hand because my old dealership knew me well and my car.

I work at a subie parts dept also and can say we dont do anything shady with your vin numbers, just trying to get the customer the right parts the first time. And the parts electronic catalog and the parts billing system are two different systems not linked together.
