Gravel roads - ABS or no ABS?
Trying to figure out what stops me faster on gravel covered dirt roads since I've been rallying around on some quarry and farm roads lately. I need a way to stop and somehow I don't think that ABS is the most efficient way to stop.
Now before anyone says anything about locking up the brakes and such, I have a lot more experience with cars that don't have ABS then with (though I know enough to hold the brake to the floor in an ABS car instead of pumping it). Now I would think that no ABS would stop me faster because it would create a plowing effect rather then skimming across the top of loose gravel. Anyone know? Maybe the rallycrossers out there can answer this one for me.

ABS is inferior on any surface where the tires deform the terrain.
When you lock the brakes, a wedge of terrain forms in front of the tires and creates additional friction. If you have tires totally inappropriate to the terrain you're not going to stop very fast no matter whether you use ABS or not. I'm no rallycrosser but I sure raced a lot of dirtbikes. |

i think ABS hinders your performance... most definately... |

LOL yeah I can imagine trying to stop a road bike offroad (I was always the idiot that you saw riding bikes (as in pedal) off-road with street tires ).
Guess it's time I get working on my car even more now... I think I'm getting better and better at hacking up this wiring system, LOL. |

i was spinning my obs in a few development areas where i knew the construction companies. last fall, i fully tested my braking over and over again with and without abs, and even with my slow pumping feet, sans abs was the way to go, and in some cases [sand and loose small gravel] it was significant. over clumping dirt the abs sometimes actually slowed me down quicker, but coming to a complete stop, abs took longer. wish i had a g-tech or something to get some values.

if you are looking to play around or slid around, don't use ABS. if you have to stop really quick, yank the e-brake up really fast, and get on the brakes. this stoped me from hitting my neighbor this morning on my way to a christmas tree field.

ABS doesn't allow gravel or snow to wedge up between the tires and road. So stopping distances are worse. I wish we had a way to disable it on gravel and snow, and leave it running on ice and water.
It would be kinda like the on/off switch for traction control on the Pontiac GranPrix GT I test drove last winter, just for ABS instead of TC. Larry |

My parent's Audi has an on/off switch for the ABS, just thought I'd say that.
