Yeah, please support Xluben.

Just ordered a flip-key shell and a 2011 legacy key from him. He responded very quickly, and I can't wait to do this mod. (well, actually, I HAVE to wait until my 2013 arrives )

I'll be disassembling the legacy key for the remote innards, then using my valet key for the transponder, and having the dealer laser cut the key blank that comes with the flip-key case. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Question:
If I cut up my Valet key and use the transponder chip from the Valet key, but then have the dealer cut the flip key using my normal Black OEM key, will I have any problems?

I wanted to not destroy one of my good normal keys. The Valet key is of no concern to me but I wanted the flip key to have access to all locks in my car.

It would and the remote would fit right into the flip shell so that part is easy. The only issue is the blade. I do have non laser cut key blanks but the only have one thin side (fits Subarus older than 08) but does not fit the 2012 Impreza. So you'd have to modify a stock blade.

That'll be fine. It is the specific way the end of the valet blade is, take a look at the angle of the tip compare your regular and valet key that little bit is what determines if it can open the trunk and glove box locks or not. The rest of the tooth pattern and the transponder are all the same between all the keys. As you said, make sure have them cut from your VIN (dealer) or copy one of your black keys.

Flip keys and power folding mirrors you will be styling ;-)

Thanks, I had it cut today at a local shack. Cost me $25 and it works perfectly. The only thing I have left to do now is the programming That 8 digit code will be the death of me.

Looking forward to some fancy pants mirrors. I installed my s206 side skirts just a few min ago.

Is anyone else having issues with the blade that came with the flip key being a little loose? I can shake the flip key housing and the blade rattles a little bit.

Yes mine is slowly starting to get loose.

Also after having this for about 6 weeks I have to say I am not that big of a fan of this mod.

Besides the key being loose (blade to mechanism, and mechanism in the housing), the button you push to flip the key open is too tall and the key constanly pops open when in my pocket. (and I wear pretty loose pants)

For the total cost of this mod I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone based on my experience. When it finally falls apart I am going to start using my fob and key again.

You can prob tighten the blade. I'm using the one that came with it with no problems. mine also doesn't open on it's own in my pocket. to each his own though.

I was thinking when it goes bad then I will use the Legacy key which is still better then separate remote.

Default Fantastic!

I wanted to post here to say thank you to xluben.

My 2008 Legacy GT key is square and the remote buttons won't integrate into this housing. I ended up buying a 2009 Legacy/Outback remote key and transferred it over to the flip key housing. I programmed the remote using the instructions in this thread. I got my non-laser flip key cut by a locksmith for $20, and it probably could have been cheaper had I priced/shopped. The last thing was, I took out the tiny immobilizer chip from the original square key and put it into the flip housing.

It's all working great and for less than $90.

^That's great! A very similar process to the 2011 WRX, but with some different parts.

FYI - Getting a non laser blade cut should be very cheap. Like a few dollars. Laser cut is usually $20-40.

A local key shack cut mine for 25 bucks.

Overall I'm a little disappointed that the key blade has so much slack in it. It just doesn't feel as solid as my old normal key ( my old normal key doesn't have moving parts so Idunno).

With the design of the flip mechanism a little play is necessary. It is a metal pivot assembly that rotates in a plastic housing. If it were too tight it would cause binding. Overall it's not as nice as a flip key from a luxury automaker (or even Mazda, Audi, etc), but I still think it works quite well.

The little bit of movement has never bothered me. I didn't even notice it until someone mentioned it and went out of my way to try and feel it. But if you're trying to feel it, there is definitely some motion. It will never feel as firm as a solid piece of metal with rubber on it. Keep this in mind if you're thinking of doing it.

I have had my flip key for 8 months now. I use it every single day. My car is my daily driver to work and back, so it's seen plenty of use. It honestly looks just as good as new. The most wear is probably in the OEM key blade (which was the valet key so it had seen zero use prior to being in the flip key).

Don't get me wrong, its a cool key and I'm glad I bought it. But I think ill continue to use ny OEM key for now. I think ill just jump to the push button start and proximity key.

I'm happy with mine, I'm looking forward to putting it to use... My car should arrive next week so I'm hoping to have my dealer cut the blade and program the new immobilizer from the Legacy key before I even take delivery of the car.
