You running a wagon or sedan? That will make all the difference in antenna mounting options. I'll post some pics of my wagon's antenna setup soon.

Where are you thinking of installing the radio itself? This is the biggest problem in my install. Since I RARELY use it, I just keep the radio under the pass. seat and pull it out when I need it, sitting it on the floor or the pass. seat if unoccupied. If you want a permanent install, you may want to get the Cobra WX-75-ST radio - the radio is entirely in the microphone and can be mounted on a hook on the dash somewhere. If I used my radio often enough I would go this route.

its a sedan.
yea, im installing the radio myself. if the unit is small enough, its going in my 2nd din pocket. if not, mounted on the side with velcro strips.
im not gonna be using the radio often. i just want something small and light..
as far as antenna, im looking to get wislon 500. although i would love to get one of those long antennas sticking out from side of my trunk

Ah, in the din pocket will work quite well I'm sure. I just didn't have the space there. As far as the antenna, however, you WILL get scratches/scuffs from a magnetic antenna. There's not a lot of great options, you'll likely have to do something custom. I have seen decent results with long antennas mounted on a low bracket sticking out from under the bumper. But here's what I did on my wagon. I made the black brackets custom to fit the contour of the siderail:

that looks simply amazing
very clean install.
i might have to go with a long antenna then...
what kind of antenna are you using?
and have you heard of any trunk antenna mount applications??

That's a 2' long Firestik II "tunable-tip" antenna. It has a thumbscrew that allows you to tune the antenna for low SWR rather than needing to cut the antenna like the original Firestik and other antennas. I used Subaru touch-up paint to color match the once-red plastic cover for the tip.

The antenna cable runs along the back and under my spoiler into a hole I drilled under there (you can see this in the 2nd pic). From there it follows the wiring from the tailgate through the rubber tube for stock wires into the headliner, down the D pillar, and along the floor to the pass. seat. I had to install the connector on the outside of the car on bare wire after running it because I didn't want to drill a hole big enough for the connector to pass through. I can't uninstall the wire now without cutting off a connector on one end or the other, not that I have a reason to.

As far as other mounting ideas, here's one I saw that might work on both the wagon and sedan. It's from another member on this site who PM'ed me the pics. Drew, if you want me to take these down, just lemme know.

You could totaly mount it to the roof rails, but you would NEED to ground it to the chassis. With no ground you will fry your radio. haha.

Here are the photos of the mount:

How did you run the coax through the trunk? Mine is super tight and pinches the cable.

That does look good. I have an older cb a friend gave me but need an antenna and have been thinking about what to get and where to mount it. I have a wagon so i could make the brackets and stuff.

cMags, what antenna are you using? Thanks.

I haven't tried this but for the magnetic antenna's you could possibly put some "clear bra" material (a little bigger diameter then the base of the antenna) on your trunk or wherever you want to put the antenna and allow the magnet to sit on that...would that stop the scratches?

It says right on the side of the mount - Comet RS720. Found one vendor here:

cMags why didn't you just use some type of rubber (like an old tube from a bike tire) to keep the metal separate from the roof rack

CB antennas need to be grounded - the aluminum teeth on the inside of the bracket dig into the rail to ground it to the chassis. I don't plan on ever selling this car, so I accepted this minor, hidden "damage" to the car.

That black WRX is member "Noah's" car. I'm looking for something short (need to grab 800mhz trunked signals better). The newer model police Impala's have those little stubby antennas that I like (I know it serves a different purpose though).

I'll post pics soon when I can. Have a sticky antenna like above and then it runs through the pass through down round the seat up to the front drivers side. I have a Quad plug in the glovebox for power. I'll get pics soon, do it you'll love it!

i have cb's and whips for sale. my "used to be" setup was a uniden 1001z w/cobra magnetic mount on wagon. tuned the cb and the whip . received 1.1:1 swr. i like how the whip is mounted on the rail just limits your rx/tx to mostly the driver side and little forward

You might be able to go under the seat backs in the corner by the strut towers and come out near the lower seatbelt connection on either side in the back seats. Then you can run the cable under the door sill to wherever you need it to come out.

Check the A/V section - people will have done a lot of wiring to the trunk for amps/subs.
