so you are dropping a fxt drivetrain into a GF8???
I have a few posts on here asking about that swap, I have been pondering doing it and throwing ppg's in the 4.44 tranny. keep us updated |

Check the piston for nicks and lube it up so you don't tear the seal. Be glad it didn't shoot out onto your finger. Hopefully you remember to never spray air into the calipers ever again!!!
Looks good! Jay |

well its been a while since my last update on my project and alot changed. the progress of things was really coming along pretty well and the goal of driving to WCSS was looking great. unfortunatly there was a pretty signifigant snag in the way which ill get to later that froze the progress.
on a good note i did get somestuff rolling andrew and i got the harness a lil wired up, just running the wires throughout the car where theyll live. were doing a full harness swap, dash included. knowing what i know now i realize why a full harness swap is NOT easier than a merge. although if your updating the dash and dont mind or have reason to pull the whole car apart then its not that big a deal also the new crossmember is installed the heater core didnt want to fit all snug where it should, actually it didnt want to fit at all. we cut a oval in the firewall to acomidate the antifreeze that flows into the core. if you were installing ac you would also put another oval on the other side of the firewall but i skipped that. theres no way to paint to it but its the hole just right of the clutch arm that was cut. i found it was just barely too tight of a fit so removing the sound deadening did the trick. |

the next challenge was to make the dash fit. even though to the naked eye, both the 93 and 02 dash bar look like they use the same mounting points. they dont. they are close though, and through a happy accident it worked pretty good. in the 1st picture, what look like the closest holes to the camera are actally 2 cut off studs. these were removed and saved in order to re weld them. if you remove all 4 studs from both sides then the bar will mount with 2 out of four holes on either side.
then youll also need to remove the pointy peices of plastic from the back of the dash in order to snug the dash against the windshield. these next 2 photos show how the dash beam bolts to either side. if i were to do this again i would make a diagram of the holes/ studs on the unibody. then id like up the rear 2 holes on the dash beam with the dagram and just drill 2 new holes so i could use all 4 stock mounting points from the body. we left the dash out since theres alot of wiring to b done still |

i also got most everything back from the machine shops. instead of a 2.2 which is my favorite motor im going with a 2.5 sti block. that might change in the future but i had a 2.5 availible so i rolled with that. it had a bad rod bearing... big surprise! sooooo i had the crank polished and got new bearings from bearing services in portland oregon. these guys are super legit and do really quality work.
the block was honed and resurfaced then i got the heads back from cylinder head specialties. they had 7-8 hours of port and polishing done prior to being dropped off. THIS IS WHERE THE NIGHTMARE BEGAN. we recieved the heads and they LOOKED really nice at first glance. now i havent done too much more than bolt on mods so this kind of thing is new to me. they were supost to do a resurfacing, and a valve job... they had a weird king of sparkly look to them which my engine asembler imediatly noticed... it looked just like theyd been glassbead blasted. he said we'd wait to put the heads on till we knew what it was. so the next day he called GREG @ CYLINDER HEAD SPECIALTIES he said it was a special paint... WHAT? like i said, i dont build engines but i do know that you shouldnt have paint where your oil is. so he askes "what type of paint?" "a special paint formulated for drive trains" "who makes that" "xxx company" so my buddy is suspecious like he should be with his level of experience and calls "xxx" paint company. they tell him the make no such product. another colige of his calls, and the owner of cylinder head specialties gives the same lie. so now im brought into the situation and call the guy from the shop. greg says, "youre the 3rd guy to call why dont you bring them in and well remove the paint." so ibring them in and drop them off... an hour later i go to pick them up, theyre brought out by the shop foreman. i say thanks, and ask what was up with the paint. "well they were media blasted" "what? i thought it was paint" "no we dont paint out heads" so now im feeling incomfortable with this whole deal because i dont like being lied to i take a closer look and see theyve done an unconsistant job on the cam journals and thyve only done some of the valve journals. im livid, it looks like **** and my engine guy says no way, its not even as good as stock. i go back again tell this guy hes really bumming me out and i very disapointed in the quality of work, he says hell fix it. he does a crappy looking job again and tells me thats as good as it gets. unfortunatly the blasting was everywhere, including the cam journals. thats not good because when you blast you remove material and since theres very tight tolerences this is worring me we decide to bolt the heads up and check clearences... they dont look good... i call the owner greg "hey dude, these heads might b ruined due to all the material removed" "no theyre fine" "what? we just measured them and theyre out of subaru tolerances" "well theyre remanufacured that happens" "no, it doesnt, theres been material removed by your actions..." "no we didnt remove any material" "you media blasted the whole valve train..." "im through talking about this....click" so i take the heads to bearing services who looks at them, discused tolerences and is going to double check everything and see what can b done. i call greg again and tell him i have a 3rd party involved thats measuring/ documenting the situation. i let him know, "if they are repairable im going to chalk it up to a bad call and well never do business again. but if you have ruined these beyond repair youll be hearing from me." he interupts and says "you have to give him a chance to reapair them" "greg, i already gave you 2 chances. im not letting you touch anything. im just calling to tell you this information" sometime in the middle of my last sentence he hung up the phone. not only does CYLINDER HEAD SPECIALTIES PORTLAND OREGON do really bad work. but they also lie to customers. the owner is incredibly hard to work with. and they do not adhere to what i have learned are professional standards of machining. |

Stress is one thing. Progress is another, of which you have there. Most of us get stuck ot held up on things. My car hasn't moved from her cave for some time now and it makes me sad.
