Default MY'01 KYB GR2's just ordered

I just ordered a set of KYB GR2's for my Legacy. Nothing in stock so it is going to be about 6 weeks before I get them. Plenty of time to decide on Springs...but what to get. Right now I am leaning towards eith H&R or Prodrive. Prodrive says lowering is about 22mm which is...almost an inch...but not quite. H&R's lower 1.3-1.5 inches. Visually I think the H&R's will give a more attractive stance. But the Prodrives I think will work better with GR2's or stock struts even. However, both are made by H&R so I'm not sure how different the spring rates are. Any ideas????

Brian, can you give me your feelings on them after installation. I had Whitelines on my car before with stock struts but I was very unimpressed. Mostly due to the performance of the stock struts. Anyways, let me know.

BTW, other modifications to the car for those who car are as follows:

2001 Subaru Legacy Brighton

Rear drum to disc swap
Front Sti 4-pots
Custom made stainless steel lines
Porterfield R4S pads F and R

'00 2.5RS 16x7 wheels painted black
225/45 R16 Kumho MX

Whiteline ALK
Whiteline Front and Rear Sway bars
Cusco Strut tower bar

Sti engine and tranny mounts
Sti short shift kit

Custom cold air intake (like Ganzflow or PDM)
Borla Headers
Removable cat section (replacement straight pipe)
Custom cat back with Magnaflow SS muffler

OMP Grip Seat, waiting for brackets
OMP Shift knob (huge power gains)

Full motul fluids

Soon to get:
KYB GR2
Either Prodrive or H&R Springs
ACT Clutch when mine dies..

The Whitelines came from Jamie at Allsubaru.com. They were the last BD-specific set she had. But I know Don Nimi at PDM Racing stocks tons of Whiteline stuff.

These springs are the "Control" springs, which are supposed to lower the car 25-35mm or so, as opposed to the "Flatout" springs which lower 40-50mm. It should be a good match for the GR2's

The KYB GR2 struts (which arrived today! woooo!) came from Luke at Tire Rack.

I'm shopping around for some STi top mounts now, so I can just do it all at once.

Anything will be better than my stock suspension, which has 116,000 miles on it.

Default Enlightenment wanted:

Can someone with a 2000+ please help me?

I have a 2000 Outback wagon. I purchased Whiteline 'control' springs for it, as that is what Whiteline lists for my car. I installed them, and not only did the car drop more than 30mm, but the top few coils don't seem to fit the 'hats' at the top of the struts!

Is it necessary to fit hats from another model (a la the STi units mentioned above), or did I get the wrong springs? I have been in contact with Whiteline, and they were not aware of differences in the U.S. Outback vs. the rest of the world. I have been told though, that the 2000 Legacy takes a different model spring due to it's cylindrical shape which sounds just like the stock coils I removed!(as opposed to the almost cone-like shape of the Whiteline's I got).

No one has given me a definitive answer, and I am wondering what you folks do when installing aftermarket springs...Are different 'hats' needed for 2000+ cars?

The car looks great at it's new height! It corners very flat in steady-state curves, but there is a bit of 'porpoising' over undulations. I think one front strut is almost shot (45k) and unfortunately the aftermarket doesn't support the Outback!!! Looks like I will have to go with stockers again.

You definitely need new tophats in the front only. The cheapest solution is to get them out of an old 2.5RS. When I had Whitelines that's what I did and I was lucky to get them for free. Sti topmounts would be another way to go. But YES, you definitely need different top hats in order for the spring to seat peoperly.

Default whiteline control and GR-2

Hi Tora,

I have the Whiteline Control springs on my Sube with GR-2's and I'm very happy with the combo. I have nothing to compare to except the stock ride. But I'm very happy with my setup.

I'm not sure how stiff you were looking to go, but I think right now it is perfect. Stiff, but not so stiff, or low that passengers get sick of bobbing up and down.

Tora, that's just for the BE/BH, right?

Whitelines for earlier Legacies should fit without a tophat swap, I thought.....

Yup, only for BE/BH. Others will be fine.
Kraziken, thanks for your imput on the Whitelines but I will not be using their springs again. I think H&R's quality is far superior for almost the same amount of money.

I got my from KYBSTRUTS.COM and came right away..

and they were cheap too..

I did installed them with stock springs.. and man they are stiff.. no need to replace springs.. better than stock setup that came from factory as brand new. Oh.. and my gained about .5 inch on each side.. or I guess the old ones were worn out so badly it actually sagged.

Well most of you know that I have the Prodrive springs (H&R made) and I can not wait to get the GR2;s to run them with my springs. Should be a awsome combo, maby KONI inserts?

Solomon- why bother with Koni inserts if you're getting new GR2's?

--If you do want to do the Koni inserts rather than replacing the whole strut, many folks recommend buying a used set of struts so you can do all the prep ahead of time. Much less down time for your car.

Ya I thougt that would make no sense. I swore I saw someone saying that they did that or wanted to do that to gain some performance. Sounded odd to me. That is why I added the "?" at the end of it. =)

Default Datapoint on springs...

I have been back and forth with Whiteline all week. Apparently, the US Outback (Maybe the other Legacy's are similar) is different from the rest of the universe. There is a different model spring that does not taper at the top like the 70366 does. A set is already on it's way, hopefully this will give me the piece of mind I am after!

Thanks for the confirmation Tora, et al
