What is that thing called that the water company has to measure how much water your house uses?

Thats what I thought, I told my friend (who is asking) a 'hydrometer' but he didnt believe me, I thought it sounded good.

More looking for a responce from someone who knows for sure, the 'official' name.

Your friend is smart Call it a water meter, call it a flowmeter, but a 'hydrometer' measures specific gravity.
