Default Brake lines....

I have a set of stainless steel braided brakes lines new in a package that were for my WRX. I am assuming they will fit on my STi too?

- hopefully same brake line length (the braided brake lines actually come about 1-2 inches longer from the factory than rubber ones)

- univeral connections at each end. Assuming....


I hope they do fit. Brake feel should feel pretty good. Anyone else replaced their brakes lines before? I've only had them on my motorcycles before and they feel awesome. Should be the same for the STi / other Subarus?

Actually, this is not an unreasonable question for this forum (what will fit the STi...).

You'll probably have to wait and see. I suspect the caliper end could be a little different though for example on the AP kits the stock lines (and therefore aftermarket) fir the WRX just fine.

Do we know for sure that the STi doesn't come with stainless steel brake lines?

Very few cars come from the factory that way.

And in fact, stock lines (when new) are pretty good. I just put decent fluid in my WRX and the pedal is extremely firm.

I think the big advantage to the braided teflon lines is that they don't deteriorate quite as quickly.

From the two undercarriage shots now on the impreza.subaru.com site it appears the brake lines are rubber.

I've got a set of Stoptech brake lines that were going on my wagon, but I'll hold off now...

Default Brake lines.....

The S202 and the Limited are the only WRX's that come with braided lines. The purpose for braided lines is to prevent the lines under extreme use( racing ) from expanding because the fluid boils and allows air in the line, this then causes water to collect when it cools down, this resulting in a "spongy" pedal and increased stopping distances, or as one of my fellow instructors found out,..death =( .

So most people put good brake fluid in, to prevent the heat transfer to the caliper, and then install braided lines, and dont forget upgraded pads( not Mintex,Repco,PBR, and all the street stuff,) but PFC (Performance Friction), or Hawk blue or black, Pagid Rs4s "orange" pads are good, anyone of these will work fine at the track,..all day long, and the thing most people forget to do is actually ,.....learn how to brake,..it's not easy, seems like a no brainer, but it takes time to master.

THIS IS MY OPINION !! I have to say that, 'cause the next thing I know Bob Lee, ( general manager of STOPTECH will be trying to prove me wrong !!

So NO,..THE STI, will not come with braided lines, and keep in mind it will have "electronic brake force distribution" as standard so changing the fluid will be a bitch !! I work for Mercedes and 3 of our models have this, and when my techs have had to change the fluid it takes 4 hours, because it has to be done with the laptop and takes 4-5 GALLONS of brake fluid. So lets see,.. CASTROL SRF fluid is $ 65.00 per QUART !!!! A freaking grand to put the good stuff in my STI,..I dont think so,..even if you try to use the "racing blue" it's gonna be $ 10.00 per quart,..yep..

Just something to think about,....so let's keep our fingers crossed,..( those of use who take our cars to the track) that the STI comes with some type of good DOT 5 or silicone based fluid.

AGAIN, THIS IS MY PERSONAL .02 CENTS WORTH,.I AM NO AUTHORITY ON BRAKES,..GRANTED I HAVE 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE COMBINED WITH INSTRUCTING, RACING AND BUILDING RACECARS,..BUT IM AM NO AUTHORITY !!!

Since we're talking WRX parts on the STI. Anyone know if the BOV I bought for my WRX will fit the STI intercooler? It seem s like a waste to sell it since I never even bothered to put it on.

IMO silicone brake fluid is potentially dangerous for track use as compressability increases with heat to a point where there can be a loss of braking power. Glycol based fluids are preferable for track use, even though due to them being hygroscopic, they need to be frequently changed. Otherwise, corrosion in your brake system can lead to potentially expensive repairs. Silicone does not have that problem and is thus ideally suited to cars that see less use and less servicing.
