Default Help!! My car won't go into 2nd

I posted in Tranny forums but not much help. Beginning last night I cannot shift into 2nd gear at all. All other gears shift smooth. I have never had a problem with grinding gears. A couple of months ago my car would not let me shift into 2nd but it quickly fixed itself.....this time it's not. Some have said broken shifter fork and others say synchros. Don't you usually get a warning when synchros go bad i.e. grinding during shifting and such. Mine went out suddenly which makes me think it is something in the linkage which needs some adjustment. I have kartboy bushings which have been in for about 6 months. I could really use some advice because 1st to 3rd is killing me in the city.

Thanks
Tyler

Take a look at the linkage under the car. If all is well there, then it has to be something internally with the tranny.

Could improper torque specs on shifter bushings cause this? They were torqued correctly when I installed them but maybe it has changed.....?

Have you tried double clutching into 2nd? If the synchro is bad, this will let you into the gear.

Quote:
1. Let off the throttle, press in the clutch, and shift the "stick" to neutral.
Let out the clutch.
2. Bump the throttle to make the engine "blip". Sometimes in my MG I'll press in the accelerator all the way to the floor for a fraction of a second.
3. Press in the clutch.
4. As the engine speed decreases to match the transmission speed, throw the stick into the next lower gear. Since you actively "matched the revs", it should fall right in!
5. Let out the clutch. The downshift should have been as smooth as butter!
From my old Honda days (it was a real issue in the H22a, or Prelude, transmissions), sometimes the teeth of a gear can "mushroom" out at the dges which will be hardly noticable at all until the gear can no longer engage because the edges are too rolled over.

As for a broken shift fork... I don't know what those symptoms are and I would imagine it would effect more than just second since it is a major component in the tranny.

If it's a shift fork, something could have broken and jammed itself between the 1-2 shift fork and the 2nd gear collar, thus not letting you select 2nd. Unless it's a bent shift fork, but that issue is usually with the 3-4 fork.

i had similar problems and all i did was change out the gear oil...but that was the first oil change for that tranny. id say find someone to swap out your downpipe with and get some warranty work done.

good luck.

so if the the stick won't go into 2nd position, it probably isn't a broken fork, will it go into second with the motor off? if it will, then it probably a syncro issue.

of course, going into reverse at about 100mph will solve all your problems.

no it will not go into second with the motor off.....as for SoD I can't make that kind of drive. Subaru SW in Houston does good service work....if they don't warranty i am getting FIS gears.
