Computer guys, why won't my comp. shut off????
I have done nothing to my computer lately but in the last 4 days, When I click on start and "shut down", It goes to that "Windows is shutting down screen" and just stays there. cntrl+alt+delete doesn't work and all I can do is shut it off manually. And when I start it, I get the "comp. was not shut off correctly, blah, blah" screen.
It is Windows 98. Please help me. what could be wrong?? Eric

You may have a program or driver that wont unload
Try CNTRL ALT DEL to see what is running before you go to shut down. |

Your computer knows that you've been surfing the i-Club and it's now also become addicted.
You probably just need to do a re-install. It only takes a couple of hours and is pretty simple. Win98 and XP are really bad for this. Don't know a solution for XP because it's junk, but every time my old Win98 machine started doing this I knew it was time. |

Roomate had this problem once, turned out to be an inordinately long shutdown sound.... He was using some sort of really expensive Yamaha sound card for sequencing stuff.

there is a background process still running. start up with safe mode and test shut down. If it works fine. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Taks Manager and click on the processes tab. Compare this list with the list you get when startup normally. It's a pain, but eliminate one at a time and you'll find out what is causing it.

go to start, run, type in MSCONFIG, click on the tab that says 'startup'. there will be a ton of things with checks next to them. These are all programs that are running in the background. take them all out, except for systray. Hit 'apply' then hit 'ok' on the next screen. IT will tell you to restart, click on restart. If it restarts, great, if not manually shut it down. when it comes back up, go back to: start, run, type in MSCONFIG, click on the tab that says 'startup' and make sure the checks you took out are still out. If they are try to shut down, I can almost guarentee that it will shut down. IF they checks are back you will have to go to Safe Mode as iBlueVirus suggested, and do the un-checking of the programs. And btw, I usually don't go back to narrow it down. Your system will run better and faster with all those out anyway. (put back any antivirus, and registrychecker, and task schedualer) And you can trust me. I do this every night for a living. The only times that the above has not fixed it is when it was something attached to the system that had a corrupt driver, ie, printer scanner, etc. -Mike |

My mom's old compuer did that. Verdict, bad power supply. Don't know if that will help at all, but thought it was worth mentioning.

let me just add, don't mess with msconfig...it really will likely not help...it has a better chance of screwing something up than it does of helping you out...you aren't a professional so you shouldn't be doing things on your own that could screw up your system without a professional there...we can throw out all kinds of computer mumbo jumbo but we know what we are doing so it makes sense to us
just don't mess with your config stuff...if your computer used to shut down fine, you haven't added anything (that you know of), and now it's not, going in and screwing with msconfig doesn't make sense |

chosenwon, i know YOU know what you are doing, but HE is a lay person, not a computer geek like us...maybe you could tell him to randomly delete some regkeys too
besides, i would 99% guarantee doing what you suggest would not fix the problem...if you knew about 98 you would know that there are many known shutdown issues with 98 and 98se...your method risks potential, unrelated damage based on little or no logical reasoning and poor troubleshooting technique instead of addressing the known issues that are most likely the cause of the problem...standard (read good) troubleshooting technique would be to eliminate the known causes of the issue before attempting to lead a user through system changes no matter how minor |

I have a paypal dollar that says editing the startup group through msconfig fixes him.
and you critique my answers? HA! yours are links to check IRQ settings, (yeah great idea, let the enduser mess with those!) or clearing NVRAM ( ok now stick your hand inside the case, and look for a little plastic jumpter the size of a big match head. BTW do this wrong and fry your MBD) I will give the shut down supplement, but that is not good either considering his issue JUST started. This is sooo third party software hanging up the system. |

I only mentioned it (and usually try not to) because it is a direct pc troubleshooting job. which is exactly what he needs right now. I was just saying that I am qualified to give advice. I didn't say gateway techs are the greatest, because we both know they are not. Let's not get personal -LD, you seem like a cool guy, and I don't want to take it there with one of the few people that has credibilty around here. -Mike |

i think i might get out of the industry...it pretty much sucks and is a bunch of BS anymore...it never comes down to what you know, it only comes down to who you know...and unfortunately i guess i don't know many of the right people
like today, my roommate (who apparently does know some of the right people) asked me to come to a consulting job he had been working...i am bored so i said what the hell...in two hours i fixed and improved what he had been working on for two weeks...now i'm not saying i'm smarter than him or anything, but i would have been 100 times better for this particular job than him...but he always gets hooked up with things that are over his head that i could do so much better...it's frustrating at times |
