Default Small Plane Crashes into Raw Sewage Tank

Japanese nationals reportedly on plane that crashed near Gilroy

Marisa Lagos and John Koopman, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

(12-19) 08:16 PST GILROY -- Three Japanese nationals, one of them a U.S. resident, may have been on a plane that crashed into a tank of raw sewage near Gilroy Monday afternoon, authorities said this morning.
Federal Aviation Administration officials cannot not confirm the identity of the aircraft that crashed into the tank -- or of its passengers -- until the plane is fished out, but said this morning that they had found a flight log and a Japanese passport near the wreckage.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor also said that a Beechcraft Travel Air -- a twin-engine plane -- had been reported missing from a San Jose flight school Monday afternoon.

The plane, from Nice Air, had a flight instructor and two Japanese visitors on board, he said, and was due back to Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose at 5 p.m. All three people on the plane were Japanese nationals, he said, adding that the plane had left the airport around 1 p.m.

"I can't confirm that it was the plane that crashed, but intuitively you can put two and two together," Gregor said.

Authorities believe the crash occurred around 4 p.m. Monday.

There are no airfields or landing strips nearby the sewage treatment plant, which is located on the south end of Gilroy between Highway 152 and Highway 25, according to Gilroy authorities.

"But if it's uncontrolled air space, they can fly wherever they want," Gregor said.

Gilroy police Sgt. Kurt Svardal said Monday that the aircraft came pretty much straight down into a holding tank filled with raw sewage at a sewage treatment facility, adding that it was too dangerous for a dive team to go into the water and check for bodies or the tail number of the plane, which would indicate who owned it and where it was from.

The tank is about 20 feet deep and will have to be drained before authorities can definitively identify the aircraft or passengers.

After receiving reports of a crash around 4 p.m., police spent an hour and a half checking the area. Workers at the sewage treatment plant noticed damage to a railing around the tank and notified authorities, who determined that the plane had gone into the tank.

The tank is a couple hundred feet in diameter, Svardal said, which means the plane probably came in at a very steep angle.

I'm not calling him unlucky, but if he fell into a barrel full of t**s, he'd come up sucking his thumb.
