Default will a 99 2.5rs engine bolt into a 99 legacy outback?

ok I'm looking @ buying an outback for short money, its got 140k on the clock...the car is MINT....other than having a siezed engine...

can I directly bolt in a 99 2.5rs engine? or will I get a cell???

as long as its phase 2 will it be 100***37; bolt on ?

its not like I'm trying to change phases...

in vice versa... can I swap a (phase 1) 98 2.5rs engine into a 98 outback ?

the search button is your friend.....

also, more info would be helpful...

what does the legacy have in it right now? auto, 5 spd? there are small variables that actually do matter...

As far as I knew they were the same engine. Before I did my swap, I put a long block from a 1996/1997 Outback into my 1998 2.5 RS and everything bolted up just fine. As long as your using the same phase engine I don't think that you'll have any problems.

Actually any EJ engine can be swapped into any other EJ car. That doesn't mean that the wiring will be the same. Example, I put an EJ20G in my RS when I did my swap. Everything just fell into place other than the cross member. The wiring was a different story, but in your case, since they are the same year cars, I'm sure it will just drop right in. Don't take my word for it though because I'm not 100***37; sure.

Edit: I forgot to tell you that the EJ20G I used was an automatic also. All I had to do is remove the flex plate and install my fly wheel and clutch.

yeah the wiring is the big part...I don't want to do any extra work. Just a direct swap into the Outback...

But I also assumed that since its the same year car... that the engines would be the same...

CEL = No good

No they are not the same. 99 OB is Phase I DOHC, 99 RS is the hybrid phase II SOHC. You can swap the shortblocks but wiring is different on the heads. It can be done, but it is not plug and play.
My 99 Legacy heads are being married to a 99 RS SB as we type.
You can swap in a 1998 RS engine into the 99 Outback without issue.
Check out the N/A forum and franken engines.

Concur with linsavy. Shortblocks are interchangeable, but the intake manifold, heads, and various sensors are different.

Sorry about that. I didn't realize that the 99 OB still used the Phase I engine. I knew that they switched to the Phase II engine in 99 on the RS so I just assumed that they switched the entire line of Subaru's. They should have anyway. The Phase I engine was/is junk. By far the worst engine that Subaru ever made.

Is the OB the only Subaru after 98 that had the Phase I or did other Legacy's have them too?

The EJ25D is pretty crappy. Maybe Subaru made a worse engine back in the 60s, but that one has got issues.

EJ25D may be a phase 1, but phase one is not all encompassed by the EJ25D

I know I am splitting hairs, but the EJ20G and EJ20K are both phase I motors as well. That was really what I meant by begging to differ.

I guess I should have been more specific then. I meant that the EJ25 Phase I engines are junk. I just assumed that since they were such pieces of crap, and this thread is based on the EJ25 engine, that everyone would know which engine that I was talking about.

I love my EJ20G.

have to be..no
plug and play..yes

if the block is just seized though you can slap the DOHC phase 1 heads/IM/sensors etc onto a 99 SOHC block and it will work just fine.

hhmm I'm verry curious about doing just the block...

I wonder why an engine would sieze??? if they just didn't change the oil...I'm worried that the heads are damaged too...

whata u think ?

why would a subaru engine sieze?

The EJ25D not only is famous for headgasket issues, but also spins bearings. My guess is that it popped the HG, overheated and spun a bearing/broke a rod.
The heads would at least need to be cleaned and machined true and inspected carefully.
This head/sb combo yields 10.3 compression ratio depending on gasket used. I can let you know in a week if it runs significantly better.

yup my guess would be the same as stated above. One way or another I would say it prob. spun a bearing. The other reason could be they deep puddled it and hydrolocked it.

if you have the 99 block laying around, pull the ej25D heads and take them to the machine shop to see if the heads are warped. If they are in good shape, slap those boys on the 99 block for a fabulous phase I/II frankestein

That would be my best guess too. That's what happened to the two EJ25's that I had in my RS before I did my swap. In fact, that's the biggest reason I did my swap. After spinning a bearing in two different EJ25's I wasn't about to put a third one in.
