Not too hard if you know how to use ratchets/wrenches. It's even easier to search. This has been covered thousands of times. Should take at least 2 hours.

Mileage alone is not a reason to swap out the turbo. If the car has been properly maintained and there are no signs of turbo failure (noise, loss of boost, smoke) it can be left alone. With further good maintenance the original turbo can last well beyond 100K.
Also before doing anything the turbo can be inspected by removing the inlet hose and downpipe, and checking for shaft play, turbine-housing contact, and oil leakage.

you need to remove the heatshields, IC, downpipe, and a bunch of fasteners. you will disconnect two water lines (supply and return) and one banjo bolt for the oil supply. the oil return is underneath the turbo. you'll know it when you see it... oh yeah, you also need to disconnect the two boost control hoses and partially unscrew the hose clamp on the inlet pipe to get it off the compressor housing.

if you do not do anything stupid and damage any gaskets, you won't need to replace any. i never did.

Default doesnt anyone think...

Doesnt anyone think the noise he is hearing isnt the turbo, just exhaust leak maybe on the pressure side of the uppipe- because i just installed a v34 and all supporting mods with my buddy the other day and i am now getting what does sound like the fams hitting the frame of the turbo- but only when cold engine.

this is worrying me! anyone? sorry for stealing thread, PM if prob.

Thanks,
Ryan

keep in mind that the turbo is spinning at like a gazillion rpm - if it was scraping on the housing, it would be dead in no time. I think it's something else. If it were rubbing, I would expect a constant ringing or scraping sound - even if it's only hitting in one spot, there are lots of blades, and it's spinning very quickly.

Its hard to say what it is by describing the noise, distinct sounds is what you need. I say take it to a well know turbo mechanic and have him listen to it. It might save you money.
