you don't need anything special, just be sure everything is unplugged before your drop the old one out. Tranny jack would help alot of you have one available.

If you have a late model 04 you will have male axles, the 03 box has female axles.

so depending on what you have it might drop in or you will need axles.

2 ways to tell.

Google your tranny number. Or get under the car and take a look.

Female axles have roll pins to hold them onto the male stubs from the tranny.

Male axle use a retainer clip on the axle stub that is inserted into the tranny.

ok so this is what I found
US Impreza WRX late MY04 TY754VV5AA 3.454 1.947 1.366 0.972 0.738 3.333 1.100 3.900 Viscous (4kgf) Open 1st synchro changed to dual cone type?
It looks like late model so yeah I need to change the axels.
do you guys know if i need to modified any thing on the breaks or will the axels work with the 04 breaks?

just go under the car and take a picture and post it for use. take a pic of the half shaft were it meets the transmission. its easy to tell from a pic
all 02-07 wrx axles fit each other. its just the inside part of the axle that mounts to the trans that changes in late 04 into 05.

No mods needed. That end of the axle is the same. All the 5x100 hubs take the same axle spline

As an alternative you can insert stubs into the tranny and run your female axles, you will also need the proper seals to match the axles.

these guys
