I just installed 4 Kicker DS65 (6.5) in the doors, Powered by a 4 channel Kicker amp. And then a kicker 12" CVR with a 500watt Kicker amp. It sounds GREAT. But I have always been a kicker fan, mainly because decent price and haven't had problems with them. Only problem is the front speakers are vibrating too much at higher volume. (I made the spacers for them with some MDF) But when I pull my door panel out a little bit it goes away. So it's hitting somewhere. Going to look more into it tonight when I get off work and figure out what it's hitting.

My Car:
Alpine Type R's.
I like them. They get pretty loud and have good mid range kick. The tweeters can be a little harsh at times.

My Wifes car:
Polk DB6501. They are softer than my Alpines especially in the highs. I probably have them a little underpowered though so they could possibly be better.

Both are miles ahead of the stock 6 speakers stereo. Both have a ton of sound deadening.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies! I'm going to listen to some JL C5's and the Focal 165's before I make a decision, but I think that's the direction I'm headed at this point. I already ordered a few yards of dynamat and I'm going to do the enitre car, so hopefully that will help as well. Thanks!

In for more discussion.

For what your willing to spend just on your speakers in the front, you can get a set of 4 alpine, fosgate ect. I prefer Polk audio good warranty great product and you can beat the hell out of them before they blow, they are also marine certified aka waterproof. I have a thread on here some where me and a few other members got going, research the product you want and how you want it to sound. DONT BE CHEAP YOU WILL REGRET IT.

Someone has already mentioned it, but if you can get some oldschool mb quarts, those things are ****ing epic....

I'm running some cadence components, it's some of their older line. Silk tweeters, aluminum cone, neodymium magnets, external crossovers.... Real nice setup, the tweeters aren't harsh, but they are crisp and do shimmer. The woofers have a good amount of excursion and reproduce music accurately down to about 40-45hz. I'm thoroughly pleased with them!

It's been in my experience, that JL speakers don't really compare to their subs. Although the last pair I bought was about 7 years ago, I decided to try the focals this time. Their dirt cheap and get really good reviews. I'll be pairing a JL sub though, or a morel if I can afford it.

Go active and screw components, pair your own set of speakers sometimes cheaper and choosing from the best speakers in the world.

You, sir, sound like you have a good grasp on what quality sounding music is! I'll look into some older MB Quarts, though I think I'd much rather go with something newer. I guess if I heard them and liked them enough it wouldn't be a problem, but I'm trying to decide between the Focals and JLs. Time will tell.

It's interesting that you say that. I've been thoroughly impressed with the C5 series from JL, though the Focals [at their price] look like they're going to be hard to beat. Maybe I'll do the Focals and invest in a head unit and some rear coaxials or something just for the complete package at once... Again, time will tell.

Thought of doing this, though I think I'd much rather just have a plug and play system rather than trying to piece together some of them. Audio is not my forte, just looking for something that's going to give me good, quality sounding music, regardless of genre.

Idk about you, but approximately $500 for a set of components (P165 V30's) is not dirt cheap for me.

+1

Components are a waste of money and you're stuck with the crossover slopes they provide. Passives are also pricey and rob your system of power.

If you're on a budget CDT closeouts are a good route to go. $250 could get you into a set of ES06/020s for under $200. They aren't as high SQ as a set of Audible Physics or Scanspeaks but they are a tier above most store-bought brands.

I used a pair of ES020 widebands in my 3-way active front stage. With a little work they integrate nicely into the door card cupholders.

My recommendation is to ditch rear fill completely (except sub). Spend the money up front where you'll hear it and keep your stage in front of you.

I just got all new speakers for my 02 wagon this week. This is my second wagon, and my second time putting Focal speakers in. They tend to be "brighter" than the Alpine Type-R's mentioned. I was able to compare the Focals to Pioneers, Hertz and the Alpines at my local shop. I got the Focal 165 a1 sg components this time around and 165 ca1 sg coaxial speakers for the rear. I'm using a JL amp (4x75w) to power them, and I'm really happy with them...again.

Yeah, I went with the Focal 165 components in the front and the 165 coax. in the rear. Thoroughly pleased with my decision, some of the best upgrades I've done thus far. Amp and sub to follow.

Running RE audio XXX 6.5's in my car. Took a bit of trimming to get them to fit, and my windows don't go all the way down anymore (stay up about an inch). Ive always had my eyes on these when i had a system in my explorer, and got a decent deal on them. I still have to tune them in a bit, but im pretty impressed. Powering them off a cheap pioneer 2 channel, looking at getting a better amp in the spring, hopefully an older sundown.

Glad to hear it! I have 2 10" Kicker CompVR subs in my car. I've had them for probably 5 years and in 3 different cars. They aren't too expensive, and I like mine. Good luck!

^And that is exactly why I wanted components that were simply plug and play. The Focals 165s I got are a night and day difference compared to stock and they fit in the stock location. Perfectly content with my purchase decision.

Try turning the volume for the tweeters down. My coaxials have a knob
in the center of each speaker.

Default MB quart

I had the old school MB quart components in my integra with fosgate punch 500 amp(For sub) and punch 100 amp for quarts, sub was punch 12. That system sounded AMAZING!! MB quarts were the shiznit back in the day, EVERYBODY had to have them if they were in competiton from 1993 until around 2004...so sadd.....
