First learning view and IAM is 5?
Car is an 03 WRX. Stock tune. Any ideas why the IAM is so low or what to look for next?

stock tune, stock car?
did you just reset the computer? that would bring it down if you took the reading after 5 minutes of driving. (more info needed) |

I changed my spark plugs over the weekend, so yes the computer has been reset.
The learning veiw I did beore this one showed an IAM of 10, then the next day it was at 5. Car is stock, tune is stock. I live in the Phoenix,AZ area so the air temp is about 75 now. The reason I started data logging now is to try and solve a problem I have been experiencing for the past 3 summers. When the outside air temp gets over say 90 the car only allows waste gate boost presure, 7 pounds consistantly. I can reset the computer and it will go back to stock boost level for 15 minutes and then pull boost again. When the air temp cools down the car is normal all winter. |

Also I think I am hearing detonation at WOT in the 3500-4500 rpm range. Sounds like a rattle.
I have data logs in Exel but it did'nt copy and paste well. Last edited by Rally Monkey; 04-06-2010 at 11:24 AM. |

What octane are you using? Posting the log like that makes my head hurt http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1015846
Maybe bad/dirty MAF or IAT. Check for oil build up in intercooler. How is the coolant temp? Have you ever tried a topend/combustion chamber cleaning? |

This could be an issue
Quote:
OP: I recommend checking the plugs first, then if they are at or damn close to .028, I would think about having someone give you a "stage 1" tune to accommodate for the piss poor gas. If you wanted to see if this will help, run the tank down lose to empty, put a few gallons of race gas in, and reset the ecu. I'll bet that the IAM stays at 16 and your car gets good boost all the time. Andy |

the reason you're running wastegate boost when it's hot is because of the low IAM i would bet.

Other things I have tried was to change the MAF and front 02 sensor. I used sea foam at one point. I just found a gas station down the street from me that sells 100 octane race gas, I will try that. I saw at home Depot that theysell camera scopes. I would love to get one of those to inspect the inside of the combustion chamber maybe that would reveal carbon build up.

I was just stating it for the OP cause I wasn't sure through the posts if he was clear on that was why his car was behaving that way. really?!? how much? why would they have these at home depot? mold inspections in walls?? I really can't think of any good reason. |

So far I lean very heavily toward the "stock timing is ridiculous" theory as I have seen improvements from reducing timing, but if the problem goes away with 100oct that would settle the question IMO. |

You won't see detonation in WOT on your lv. From what I remember in an old post of mine someone said if in open loop and the knock sensor picks something up, it decreases your IAM.
I had a tuning issue where I heard "rattling" at wot and thought it was heat shield making IAM drop but once heat shield removed, still had rattle on wot pulls. can someone confirm. If in OL there's knock then IAM is affected and in CL it's flkc fbkc. Or does it depend on severity of knock |

It depends on about 10 different things. Basically only one sort of knock control can be active at once; FBKC, FLKC, or IAM. http://www.romraider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1840

FBKC never increases
FLKC increases, but it goes up by 0.35. It's only interesting if it goes up by 1.4. IAM never decreases. Therefore, you did not knock during that log. But, since IAM is only 5, you aren't running at full ignition advance, so the lack of knock doesn't really tell you anything. Your car had a knock problem in the not-too-distant past, and the ECU reduced IAM in hopes that it would prevent knock, and that worked. If you want to know where you were knocking, you'll have to reset the ECU and log another pull. Before the pull, check your IAM - if it's not 16, then your ECU hasn't yet raised IAM, or you've already had knock. If that is the case, it would probably be helpful to reset the ECU again, and keep the laptop in the passenger seat with IAM shown prominently, and glance at it periodically, to see if it ever goes up, or down, and under what circumstances. But do remember to look where you're going. Keep the logger going, and let that be your primary source of information. Just glance at the laptop periodically to get a rough idea of what's going on. |

Do a full pull 3-6 or 6.5k rpm's. Log RPM, load, TPS, IAM, coolant temp, KCA, ignition total timing, WB02(if you can).
Try resetting the ECU by disconnecting the batter for a bit rather then using learning view to do it. |

How do you plan to figure out where the knock is, based on those parameters? I'd always log "Knock Sum" if possible, or FLKC, FBKC, and IAM (all three) if Knock Sum isn't supported.
Or set up the timing tables so you run a fixed amount of dynamic advance in the whole table (e.g. fill it with 8.0 or something). But I'm not sure that's better than logging the three knock parameters. |
