Why don't these bastards just come out and say it?
We want to ban smoking completely. First it was "segregate smokers from non-smokers in private businesses", then it was "don't allow smoking inside most private businesses", then it was "don't allow people to smoke within 15 feet of a public building's entrance (because of the 3 seconds it could annoy people walking by), and now this. When are smokers going to get a lobby together? You know after they get done with that group they're going to come after businesses that sell alcohol too. Your driver's license will get stamped when you have children and liquor stores will have to scan it and refuse to sell to you for concern of what it'll do to affect the child. After that it'll be fatty foods. Police will start pulling over anyone with children in a car that just came out of a drive thru. You know what'd help alleviate the problem is removing the child guards on rear windows. If kids could open the back windows without restrictions they could get alot more fresh air into the car. <end furious sarcasm> |

I have a question. Is cell-phone use banned in this state while driving also ? If not, it's a waste of effort. People have been smoking and driving since the car was invented. If the desired effect here is safety, then cell-phone use should be banned !
How many accidents have you seen where smoking was the cause of the accident ? Very few. If they are doing this for any reason other than safety, then it's an infringement of our rights ! And just for the record, I smoke, but I don't smoke in my STi. |

This is kind of retarded and a persons vehicle is their property/personal space. But the part of me that agrees with it is because I feel it's distracting much like talking on a cell phone while driving, but it seems the motives behind this bill are not that.
I grew up with my dad who smoked 5 packs of cigs a day (and he still does) for 18 years of my life. I have zero health problems, so I don't see how someone in a car with a person who smokes one or two cigs is going to instantly give them cancer and boil their insides out of their eye sockets. Smoking is stupid, and the ban should be for the same reason as why the cell phone ban was put in place, not to protect the innocent children. |

slightly OT, BUT.
One of my BIGGEST peeves is how smokers are 'allowed' to litter. Why in gods name do we we allow people to throw cigarette butts on the ground, road, sidewalk, etc. Its a completely unacceptable behavior. I'm all for entirely banning the sale, use, possession of tobacco products. It is for the benefit of even smokers themselves. |

my sentiments exactly. While I wish people would stop smoking, its not the goverments right to ban it. Eventually I hope smokers will just be socially outcast and eventually itll become similar to using heroine or cocaine or something. People do it, but its extremely frowned upon by society because its a bad for them and everyone around them, but not becuase the government says so.

i fume when i get pinged with a cig butt on the highway. that one makes me want to run the bugger off the road.
Go ahead, smoke all you want, but its your choies affecting the rest of us that is not fair - or your kids. Seems like a no brainer for me. But then again, who says anything is fair or makes sense? |

talking and texting on the cell phone while driving is banned in WA as well. Honestly people need to drive not be doing other things like smoking, talking on the cell phone, or drinking coffee.

Talking on the cell phone is one thing, and I agree with it completely, along with texting. But smoking? If you can't smoke or drink from a straw in a car while driving then you probably shouldn't be on the road to begin with. I'm all for safety c'mon now.
Cigarette buds are another thing, that is just people being lazy and not putting their smokes out in an ash tray. |

If someone is smoking in the car ahead of me with their windows open, even with my windows closed, I can smell it. If someone is smoking within 100 feet of me, I can generally smell it. It's filthy and I would like it if I never smelled another cigarette. I would also like it if I never smelled another fart in an airplane - but it ain't gonna happen.

Am I the only one who thinks the most offensive commercials on TV are the anti-smoking ones?
Cigarettes are one of the few products the US still makes here and exports isn't it? |

Banning tobacco would just uproot an entire underground tobacco market where the government wouldn't be able to get it's grimy little hands on any of the profits. I can understand a private owner of a restaurant banning smoking because they don't want people to be turned away from the business by the air quality but it's none of the governments business what we do both in our private business and personal lives. |

I'm almost libertarian, but I agree with this law. Provided that 2nd hand smoke is harmful, and there is evidence that it is, this law is protecting children who can't help themselves.
I disagree that smoking should be banned in public places, especially bars. |

as for banning tobacco, good luck. the government makes way too much money from it to make it happen anytime soon. honestly i think the no smoking while driving thing is just another revenue generating law with an "itll increase safety" front thrown in for good measure. think about it, this way the government still profits directly from the sale of tobacco, and now when someone smokes in their car theyll profit from that too. sadly all the new driving laws were getting up here wont even cover the scariest thing ive ever seen a driver do, read a book on the freeway, he even turned a page! needless to say i got as far away from him as possible! |

Now if we can get these legislators in GA to sign the hands free driving..... or better yet, "you're on the phone, you get fined" bill, that would avoid all these freakin' accidents
