Turbo on the leg....
I am boosting my car next summer, but until then, what mods should i do to my engine (bolts on and internal work) to prepare for the turbo? Also, aftermarket cams are fine for my engine after its boosted, correct?

Don't screw around with cams, just do an STI shortblock for boost ^^.
Nice exhaust setup would be main thing for turbo... Then a lightweight crank pully and... well might as well start upgrading your clutch/tranny before you snap em with your turbo. Good Luck! Nick |

Be careful with cams. You'll need turbo specific grinds. (Less overlap)

You can run boost on stock internals, but the better the engine is prepped
beforehand, the less likely you will have a surprise breakdown that'll leave you without a car for a while. If your car has not had it's headgaskets replaced during its lifetime, I highly suggest replacing them. Same goes for the timing belt: if it hasn't been replaced in a long time, now's the time. A 2.5" exhaust, in my opinion, would be very important on this engine. I would not personally do anything cam-related to the DOHC engine, unless you really plan on building a race engine. Once the turbo is on, there are countless things you can do to add further power besides cams. A cam switch on this particular engine is very involved and time-consuming. The one thing that I could also recommend is a set of forged pistons. 8.5:1 or 9:1 would seriously improve the durability of your engine. I highly recommend some form of fuel controller. You will definitely want to adjust your fuel once the turbo is on, and there is a lot of power waiting to be made by doing so. The possibilities for power-gains are endless once the turbo is on. $2 or $3 can sometimes add as much as 10 hp, where on an NA engine, it took $500+ to get those gains. |

it might not be in your greatest interest to build your car for low compression and drive it around without the turbo. I would suggest putting in all the low compression pieces right before you do the turbo installation. On my car, i unhooked the turbo and drove it around just to see what it is like, and it made about 50 hp . Maybe you should look into a megasquirt as well, thats what i'm saving up for.
