Well... There are 3 hoses attached to the inlet pipe, all with fairly rigid tubing which I was a bit afraid of somehow damaging with vice grips , did all need to be clamped/plugged?

Some say all, others say none.

It's a brilliant idea though, it's stuff like this that keeps me coming back to this forum

i heard the same sound. its like a hissing sound. im wasnt sure if it was a leak or what. when you start to fill the tester with air, it wont hold pressure and sounds like its letting alot of it out somewhere. but i cant figure out where

Is it a leak, or just something i'm forgetting to plug up?

I have a dumb noob question... I want to do this... but how do you see the pressure? I mean, where is a gauge? Or are you doing this with the engine running and with a boost gauge or some type of like ECU or RomRaider logging setup?

Or do you pump air into this setup with a compressor and see where your leaks are with the engine NOT running?

lol..yeh thats a pretty noob question but i wont bash on u..you pump air into it like you would for your tires..i dont think it would be wise to turn the car on with that on

Haha thanks for not knocking on me. I went ahead and bought everything I need at Home Depot. Gotta find someone with an air compressor now, or maybe a bike pump haha. What works best to plug the 4 things coming off the turbo inlet hose, or do you leave those on? And do you plug up the other end of the inlet hose, or let the air go through the turbo? Sorry I'm such a noob I just don't wanna screw anything up and someone told me if I put 20psi of air it will go into my valves, etc?

lol..its gotta go through the turbo inlet nipples and turbo to get through the other stuff in the motor/exhaust..im pretty sure thats what needs to be done but i guess wait for another person to confirm this

Do not put 20 psi through your inlet!!!!!!

I just talked to my tuner and he says that that kind of pressure will kill turbo bearings. He said using this equipment, the max you should put to the system is 2-3psi.

Tried this on a 2.0L WRX last weekend. Works wonderfully. I only had to use 12psi, and a bottle of soapy water to find any leaks. Sprayed the soapy water on all joints that are supposed to hold PSI, any leaks were clearly evident by the soapy water starting to FOAM like crazy. 20PSI probably isn't necessary. If you drill a big enough hole for the tire valve to push all the way thru to the ridge, you won't need to use silicone since it will seal itself much like it would on a car rim. Another tip: PVC cement isn't needed to hold the cleanout adapter to the elbow... at 12psi, it wasn't anywhere near popping off and sealed well.

Did you keep the oil cap on? how about the PCV valve? what year 2.0 WRX? I had my oil cap off, and I am thinking all the PSI I was trying to push through kept going out the oil cap...my gauge wouldn't hold a reading...

Kept the oil cap on... had all the lines that come from the intake inlet capped off... can't remember if I pinched the PCV line though. It's an 02 WRX.

I don't know... but I do know that I only had to run 12psi max to find leaks... and my car is doing fine. I wouldn't do 20psi just because it's unnecessary. Better safe than sorry if it does damage something. My .02

Guys, I performed DIY bost leak check, but never got to manage to build any boost. I capped off all lines off of turboinlet except BPV line. Any idea why?

I used $20 tire inflator...

There are two categories, with no good explanation. Some cannot build pressure, no matter what and some never have problems building pressure.
It doesn't mean that there's something wrong with your car.
Someone narrowed it down where the air was just coming out of the exhaust, although he separated the intercooler from the engine, suggesting that air might go through the compressor housing into the turbine housing and out the tailpipe.
Since you have to separate all the other pipes on the inlet, you're testing the turbo, inlet, intercooler and manifold.
I think that the way a compressor works is by pressure zones, low pressure around the inlet and high pressure inside the compressor cover. I don't think that the area under the compressor wheel gets pressurized much during normal operation. When you hit it with compressed air, if some escapes by the bearings, it doesn't mean anything.
I think that in the future I'm going to test them separately and possibly skip the turbo alltogether, I think it's better that way.

How did you hook it up? Basically, you want to test all the post-turbo hoses/connections from compressor out to throttle body. Sorry for simple explanation, but you want to disconnect the hose from turbo compressor out and place the thingy in, then disconnect the hose to the throttle body and plug it and test.

Then once all the post-turbo hose/connections are tested and all leaks are fixed, remove the test thingy and the plug and put the hoses back on the throttlebody and compressor and tighten them up properly, because they are the only two places you can have an air leak now (not inlcuding pre-turbo piping/connections).

BPV should remain closed until 20-26psi depending on which BPV you have. So it all depends on what pressure you test at. If you want to test at pressures over 20psi, I'd say cap it off to ensure it doesn't bleed the pressurised air out while you are testing.
