Default How hard is it to replace steering rack bushing?

Just as the subject says, I reckon it'll be a fairly involved job?

And no, if I do it it definitely would be a competent mechanic at a dealership or a trusted speedshop.

Sometimes when I'm turning fast/hard, and I hit a bump midcorner the steering wheel would feel "displaced" and not connected to the wheels...makes for a very "unsafe" feeling y'know?

And in parking lots with concrete, when I'm turning the wheel while the car is stationary I can hear the whole steering system shudder and make noises...

I'm hoping a polyurethane steering rack bushing might help?

Is it new behaviour? I've read that many of the pre 02 Impreza were susceptible to bump steer - significant toe changes during suspension travel. It could be that, rather than any play in your steering linkage. It's corrected by shimming the steering rack to change its height relative to the rest of the suspension.

I have the exact same problem. It feels like the steering rack is loose. :monkey: Have you done suspension work or lowered the car? That might have something to do with it.

It could be the bumpsteer yes, but last I checked (a long while back) the only "fix" was available in the UK. Oh and no, this isn't new behaviour, I've had it for a while now. Dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Yes, my car is lowered on AGX/H&Rs.

BUT another fellow Vancouver member has the same problem, and he's on STOCK suspension. So ride height shouldn't be an issue should it?

It's not so much that the fix is not available here. Rather, it is finding a place that has the equipment to measure toe as the suspension is compressed. The fix itself sounds fairly simple.

I've never investigated it, but I would call the high-end alignment shops to see what they know. The performance oriented ones in particular. Frank at Driver's Edge recommended one in N.Van/W.Van that does race cars, a while back, but I've long forgotten it. Ask him.
