Default Best way to raise octane ?

Hello Folks,

What would be the best product to raise 91 gasoline to, let's say, 95 octanes ? I know some octane booster raises as much as 9 points, but that still gives you only 91.9 octanes, which is not enough to prevent detonation...

Toluene ? Maybe that 100 octanes leaded gas they sell at the airport ? Nothing more thant 91 is available at gas stations in my city ...

Looking for some help,

Thanx.

Go with toulene, you don't want to put leaded gas into your car, unless you want to ruin your cat and 02 sensor.

You cannot, must not, ever, use leaded gas in a modern car. You will ruins the catalytic converters.

Toluene is a good option. If you're going to use it consistently, there is a mix of lubricants and cleaners you must use with it as well. Others will likely be able to answer that better on here.

Here's a long topic from the Club Cobra forum which discusses octane boosting, including a lot of information (and some disinformation) about toluene...

http://www.clubcobra.com/t43065.html

My take on things:

Toluene and xylene (a very close cousin of toluene) are safe and effective gasoline additives which increase octane number. Pump gasoline generally already contains at least 10% and possibly as high as 30% of these "aromatic hydrocarbons"...

Because gasoline already contains toluene and xylene, the components of your fuel system will not be adversely affected by use of toluene or xylene as an octane booster.

Toluene and xylene are dangerous, probably carcinogenic, definitely flammable, etc. But pump gas is probably worse... Treat toluene and xylene like gasoline -- keep it in a sealed container, only pour it in a ventilated area, don't smoke or have open flames near it -- and you'll do fine.

The use of additives in toluene, like oils, mineral spirits, transmission fluid, etc., is not necessary if you are using toluene in the amounts necessary to boost octane from (for instance) 91 to 94-95. There are enough additives in the pump gas with which you are mixing to make up for the lack of such additives in toluene.

If you want to run straight toluene as a fuel, you will need additives, but which additives, and which proportions, I wouldn't care to guess.

To boost from 91 to 95 octane, you need to mix pump gas with toluene in about a 4:1 ratio -- one gallon of toluene for every four of pump gas.
