Unhappy tire (barn) woes.

So for about the last 5-10k miles I've been hearing what seemed like a wheel bearing going out perhaps in the rear. Took it in to my mechanic today and he found one of the tires had a broken belt. alas.

I take it to the TireBarn where I got `em last Feb. `08. These are Goodyear Assurance tripletreads, 80k mile tires. I've put 40k miles on these tires since I got them.

The busted tire has 2/32nd's tread left. Two fronts have 3/32nd's left and the other rear had 4/32n'ds tread left. These tires are all pretty worn.

What sucks is that I know I'll have to replace all 4 tires. But I figured I would get one for free - or at least half off, right? WRONG! No chance they could give me a discount on the rest of the tires? Nope.

They gave me a $28.99 discount on the one tire that had a busted belt. That's it. That's the best they could do.

The alignment Toe was pretty far out, ds-front: 0.20, ps-front: 0.23, ds-rear: 0.51, ps-rear: 0.19. I'm not sure that I trust their machine as I I've noticed some inconsistencies in the past with it.

I originally paid $600 for tires I was given the impression should last 80k miles. They only lasted 40k.

Now I'm paying $550 for some Michelin HydroEdge tires that I'm being told should last 90k miles.

It's just a big bummer and I can't help but feel ripped off somehow. Maybe I should have just waited until the other three wore down to the 2/32nds. *sigh*

I did have the road-size hazard warranty. Lot of use that served me. He asked me if I wanted it on the new tires and initially I told him I wasn't as interested in that now then he mentioned that it was a little cheaper than before $12.49 per tire vs. $14.99; then he answered the phone and we both got sidetracked. Then I found that he had added it on anyways. whatever. I guess maybe I might need it someday, right? I sure as hell hope not, cuz if I do I'm not gonna be able to replace just the one.

Why would you want tires that will last 80-90k miles? The compound would have to be so hard that they'd slide all over the road in any touch of foul weather, no?

I got weather handlers by Michelin at Sears @ at good deal.
That way if I have a tire problem they will fix it any where in the country, with the road hazard.

Yeah but you gotta keep all your tires within the same tread depth. If you put 30k miles on your tire and one shreds or wears exceptionally fast, unless they're willing to shave the new tire (which most places aren't) or you can find a used replacement, you will have to replace ALL 4 tires, not just the one that went out.

All the more reason to buy stickier, lower tread life tires (and hopefully cheaper), less of a risk if you shred one.

Another reason I don't c are for longer tread life tires is that I run a set of Blizzaks come winter - by splitting the mileage between 2 sets of tires from day 1 I essentially get double the mileage out of the stockers anyway

Maybe it's that most of my miles are spent on my motorcycles where quality and stability is my first priority, but I kinda feel that same way about my cars.

Heck the wife has a Mini Cooper S with DunGflop run-flats - you want pricey - they are AT LEAST $100-150 a piece which may not sound like much BUT THEY LAST 20k miles at most - she's at 100k miles now and has had 3 full sets of runflats and 1 full set of blizzaks (and we ran that set of blizzaks through the summer one year when the winter tread was pretty much gone), so she's currently running her 5th and 6th sets of tires.

Is Tire Barn providing you the Michelin "Ride of Your Life" $70 rebate? I think it's a manufacturer program as my tire shop is running the same promo. It may help your wallet pain as the HydroEdge qualifies. http://www.tirerack.com/specialoffer...p?promoID=M937

Yeah, I got that and I'm going to send it in today. And yes, it helps. It's just that I didn't expect to pay $670 for tires/svc after I spent $600 the last time I got new tires/svc that only lasted me HALF the life of the tires!

Everytime I have them rotate my tires now I'm going to have them perform a free alignment check too. Maybe Subarus just get out of alignment easy. Maybe our roads here in Southern IN just suck?

Yeah, that's a good idea about just keeping 2 sets of tires. If I had a garage I might consider doing that in the future. I'm new to riding as of last year and I need new tires for my 750 Shadow ACE. 14k miles ...original OEM tires... I'm waiting to put new white walls on in the spring, until then riding in the rain is out of the question!

I heard those Mini Coopers have issues with keeping their alignment in check? Heard they're a bit heavy for thier suspension setup. But man, only 20k for her tires?? Yeah, I'd be buying the cheaper Coopers (tire that is!)

I got one bike up on the lift, I put it there to take the rear fender off and replace the tire, but found some rust on the fender - now she's stripped down and has all new fenders and sidecovers waiting to be fit, then I gotta send them out along with the tank for new paint - this "tire" is gonna cost me $$$$

But I got two more with fresh shoes on the rear so I'm good for a little while.

Oh, uhh "White Walls"? Really? Uh mama said not to say anything when I ain't got nuttin' nice to say so that's "all I gots to say about THAAAAAAAAAAT"

Alignment? Oh yeah, that's what the Firestone (the only place around here other than the dealer who has the machine to bust-off runflats) says they don't have the tools to do on a Cooper. So 100k+ miles, no re-alignment - but the tires aren't wearing unevenly, they're just wearing - I mean we run em down to the freakin' wear bars by 20k. And that's with very few handbrake turns REALLY

I'd have put cheaper tires on the Cooper S in a heartbeat, but "she who must be kept happy" likes the idea of never having to change a flat on it, so we keep putting the DunGflops back on. The little SOB does handle like crazy. Only car I've ever owned that was about as much fun in a set of twisties as a bike. I've driven other cars that were close, like a Miata, but the Cooper is a freakin' rollerskate, just so easy to toss around that you have to!

Anyway, I hope my personal tire pain in some way has eased your own.
